My idea for the Southeast Regional & High Speed Networks

2020.08.23 16:14 ResidentRunner1 My idea for the Southeast Regional & High Speed Networks

Hello fellow railfans.
The Northeast Corridor is one of the most important rail corridors in the country, and is set to become the backbone of the East Coast. Except for one thing. There's no higher-speed rail connecting Atlanta to DC. So here's my proposal:
Have Northeast Regional style trains throughout the corridor, with branches from Atlanta to Jacksonville, Greensboro to Winston-Salem, Charlotte to Wilmington, Greensboro to DC via Danville, and another branch/half-loop going from St. Petersburg to Jacksonville via the existing Amtrak corridor along the stretch.
Southeast Regional stations along the Atlanta-DC mainline would include:
  1. DC Union Station (this can be an option, because after L'Enfant Plaza, there's rail trackage that bypasses DC Union Station and heads over to New Carrollton. That trackage could be used for high-speed rail that WON'T stop at DC Union Station)
  2. Alexandria
  3. Quantico
  4. Fredericksburg
  5. Ashland
  6. Richmond Staples Mill Road (This would probably be the high-speed station)
  7. Richmond Main Street Station
  8. Petersburg (After here, the corridor will most likely run on an abandoned ROW that goes from Petersburg down to Norlina, NC; also where the Silver Meteor branch starts, which I'll discuss below)
  9. Wake Forest
  10. Raleigh Union Station
  11. Cary
  12. Durham 13 .Burlington
  13. Greensboro J. Douglas Galyon Depot (Branch to Winston-Salem here)
  14. High Point
  15. Salisbury
  16. Kannapolis
  17. Concord
  18. Charlotte Gateway (New station, next to the Greyhound station)
  19. Charlotte Airport
  20. Gastonia
  21. Spartanburg
  22. Greenville
  23. Clemson
  24. Toccoa
  25. Gainesville
  26. Doraville (suburban Atlanta service, right next to former GM plant site, so in essence, a rail yard could be builtl here)
  27. Atlanta (new station somewhere close to downtown, or even at Atlantic Station if downtown doesn't work out)
Higher-Speed Stations
  1. DC Union Station
  2. Fredericksburg
  3. Richmond Staples Mill Road (More room, probably would be easier here)
  4. Petersburg
  5. Raleigh Union Station
  6. Durham
  7. Burlington
  8. Greensboro J. Douglas Galyon Depot
  9. High Point
  10. Charlotte Gateway (airport is too close to downtown to warrant a high-speed station, so regional would serve it instead)
  11. Spartanburg
  12. Greenville
  13. Gainesville
  14. Doraville
  15. Atlanta
There would also be a number of branches. First up is the Winston-Salem branch, because it's the shortest. This would probably be a regional branch. From Greensboro heading west, it would stop at Piedmont Triad Airport, Kernersville, and Winston-Salem. High-speed trains could go on this branch though, with a yard somewhere.
The next shortest branch is the Jacksonville branch from Atlanta. This would be part of the Jacksonville-Atlanta-Nashville-Indianapolis-Chicago or Detroit corridor eventually. For regional trains, heading south from Atlanta, stations would be at Stockbridge, Macon, Warner Robins, Tifton, Valdosta, Lake City, and Greensboro. There could also be another branch from Macon to Savannah. High speed stations here would be Atlanta, Macon, Valdosta, and Jacksonville.
Danville branch is next. Basically, this is following the Crescent corridor from Greensboro to DC. Heading north from Greensboro, this would stop at Danville, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Manassas, Burke Centre, Alexandria, and DC Union Station. Reidsville in NC is also a possibility. High speed stations here would be Greensboro, Danville, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Manassas, and DC. Alexandria is kind of too close to DC to warrant a high-speed station.
The final branch is more of a half-loop/line. It follows the Silver Meteor from St. Petersburg to Jacksonville. So, heading south from Petersburg, stations would be at Rocky Mount, Wilson, Fayetteville, Florence, Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville. For all of these branches, once the regional services join the main line, all stations for regional trains only are the same. In essence, high speed stations along here would be at Petesrburg, Rocky Mount, Fayetteville, Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville.
Notes:
  1. Jacksonville is only included in here because it's the entrance to Florida. Florida is already buliding a network, so I consider not part of the Southeast.
  2. Same with the South. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas are not included because I consider them part of the Southern Network. Geographically speaking, Atlanta is the gateway to the South.
  3. I mentioned the DC Union Station bypass. Commuter trains, including VRE & MARC, could utilize this, with connections to Alexandria and New Carrolton. This way, there could be more space at DC Union Station. Or, if Amtrak wished, they could run trains along here as well.
  4. Gainesville could also have an airport station if they wished
  5. Greenville's station could be along the stretch of rail east of the Lois Road underpass.
  6. About Atlanta's station: Atlantic Station would be the best location, because there's space for a yard right behind Target. The reason why a station here would be better is because the Crescent can be utilized to bring a new corridor from Atlanta to NOLA.
  7. u/fatherwombat pointed out that Florida is culturally southeastern. With that in mind, I've updated part of the plan. Instead of ending in Jacksonville, one branch will head to Tampa/Orlando, while another will head down the coast eventually to Miami. For the coastal branch, regional stations would be at Miami Brickell, Miami Central, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, FLL Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, Delray Beach, Lake Worth, West Palm Beach, Jupiter, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, Palm Beach, Titusville, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, and Jacksonville. For the Tampa/Orlando Branch, regional stations would be at Jacksonville, Palatka, DeLand, Sanford, Orlando, Kissimmee, Lakeland, and Tampa. Brightline could offer higher-speed stations here.

While MAU military command anticipated a preemptive ("alpha") strike to cripple Dakota's ability to respond to a land invasion, we waited too long. Having begun their own invasion, the rogue state is in a more advantageous position, but still doesn't present a threat that we cannot handle. The massive air, naval, and land superiority of the Atlantic Armed Forces affords us a credible shot at victory.
Operations conducted by the MAU to access internal Dakotan communications gives us almost instant warning of the attack. We're aware of their posturing before their arrival at our border, and so can put our defensive plans into action to protect our country and the life and liberty of those within.

Operation Lunar Clock

Mid-Atlantic doctrine on Dakota identifies their nuclear stockpile as an alpha priority target, commanding the destruction of their ICBM LCC's prior to the commencement of conventional operations. The high-priority targets will be F.E. Warren AFB, Minot AFB, and Malmstrom AFB.
Thus, 30 B-21s of the Strategic Air Command, operated by the 11th wing out of Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling will fly in a high arc over Canada as pictured, turning over the Hudson's Bay and heading south towards the Canada-Dakota border. Canada has no inward-facing early warning infrastructure, but the bombers will fly over unpopulated areas to minimize risk of detection, as well as other measures detailed below. In case of Canadian air command noticing our bombers, B-21 are permitted to break radio silence and explain the sensitivity of the operation and the possibility of nuclear winter enveloping Canada should their stealth be compromised.
The aircraft will fly at night, skimming their service ceiling in a straight line formation spaced roughly 50km apart. As they approach the Dakotan border, they will assume a tighter formation to ensure the bombings of the silos are conducted simultaneously. This means that Wyoming group will move first due to being deeper into the country, while aiming Montana and ND groups to enter at the same time. In case of detection, B-21 will beeline to maximize damage. However, we know all stationary radars in USA, both knowing this area has no EW radars facing inwards, that Great Plains are extremely spaced which makes it easy to fly through unpopulated areas devoid of sentient life, like national parks or the entire state of Wyoming. Lack of air bases also plays in hand, as we will be able to skim through radar coverage we might be aware of using stealth to pass through the gaps. In case of E-3 patrols, we consider that they are spaced enough and still concentrated on our border, making it hard to detect until it's too late.
Once B-21 are lined to strike, we will initiate attack. B-21 are carrying 4 BLU-119 bunker buster JDAM , 6 JASSM-X33 JSM and 4 JATM for A2A missions (totalling ~18t), in case of fighter or AWACS detection\anti-raditation mission.
Our main target are 45 LCC controlling 400 ICBM. They are located deep in the ground, but we estimate based on our blueprints that BLU-119 should be able to penetrate earth, concrete and steel covering the pod. By killing all LCC in the base, we will be able to erase ability of Dakota to launch their ICBM. We estimate that with 10 B-21 targeting 15 LCC, them being quite close to each other and range of JDAM, we will be able to destroy all LCC in less than 10 minutes - far less than it'd take to respond. 40 LCC per 15 LCC means that we will have enough to spare, with the rest going to bases controlling LCC - F. E. Warren AFB, Minot AFB, and Malmstrom AFB.
Dixie has literally everything thousands of km outside the bases, meaning they can't really respond even if they detect us, allowing B-21 to strike JASSM-XR with the range of 1900 km, or JSM with the range of 550:
  • Wyoming group, due to close range to Colorado, will use 330 JSM launched at Buckley AFB, Peterson AFB, Schriever AFB.
  • Montana group will use 60 JASSM-XR launched at Hill AFB, Utah(40), Ellsworth AFB, SD (15) and Tinker Air Force Base, OK (5)
  • ND group will use 50 JASSM-XR launched at Tinker Air Force Base, OK, MCconnel AFB, Vance AFB, Altus AFB and 55 JSM launched at Grand Forks AFB
After launching their missiles and bombs, B-21 will use JATM to strike at any advancing aircraft and retreat to either MAU through Canada or Superior, or Sierra.

Operation Luna Dial

Concurrent with the first strike against the AFBs, we will make sure to strike Midwestern Air bases, getting rid of their infrastructure and arsenal. While we hope to strike bombers while they are on the ground, even if we don't, we still have ground control, hangars and munitions to strike. With Midwestern bases holding nuclear bombs, we have to strike them at first priority.
20 B-21 will be launched, going through Superior due to bilateral defense agreement and to avoid most predictable angle of attack. B-21 will carry 40 JST and 10 JATM each, allowing to counter incoming fighters, use JATM as anti-radiation missile to destroy radars and strike retreating\launching aircraft, especially AWACS. Overall, 800 JST and 200 JATM are launched in this operation.
Striking at all major Midwestern air bases, we have priorities:
  • Nuclear bombs located in Midwestern Arsenals
  • HM-2 launchers, if any are located
  • Planes on the ground
  • C2, Air Defense and radars
  • B-2 hangars
  • Runways
  • Whatever our pilots deem necessary
  • Army bases and their infrastructure
Whiteman Air Force Base is our first priority as a holder of B-2, yet other bases are also targeted, included but not limited to:
  • Wright-Patterson AFB
  • Grissom Air Reserve
  • Scott AFB
  • Offutt AFB
  • Midwestern IAP holding National guard aircraft
  • Other targets and bases our pilots can reach
Meanwhile, to ensure success, we will provide our B-21 with a coverup. Our Army has significant amount of hyper-sonic missiles, mainly RGM/MGM-190 Phantom with 430 km range and Mach 7 speed, and Precision Strike Missile with Mach 5 speed and 800 km range. We have 400 Phantoms and 375 of PSM launched on our M270 and HIMARS. We will strike 50 of Phantoms and 75 of PSM at Midwestern bases in our reach, striking advancing forces, planes and C2 to prevent invasion. HM-2 takes the highest priority, as part of specific operation:

Operation Love-Colored Master Spark

Covering in addition to our previous operations, this is operation is planned to guarantee extermination of HM-2 missiles. With Lunar Clock covering Great Plains and Lunar Dial - Midwest, we can place priorities for these operations and add more munitions to ensure getting rid of HM-2 properly. While less dangerous due to extreme number of SM-3, THADD and Patriots, better safe than sorry.
Thanks to our moles, time passed and knowledge of rough outline of the program (and to that research was done in diplo post without rolls on secrecy) we can estimate range of HM-2 as 1500 km. Deducing what our major targets are and extrapolating from the range, we can deduce that there is no way HM-2 are beyond MIMAL. By using our cybernetworks, spy satellites and NRO, we can determine location of HM-2 and strike them before they manage to launch.
We will launch a massive areal attack on advancing forces of Dixie, with highest priority being destruction of HM-2, followed by mopping up bases in Dixie proper, followed by destruction of advancing forces.
20 B-21, 8 B-2, 8 B-52 and 20 B-1 are scrambled to launch enormous amount of ordnance, supported by PSM and Phantoms on land and naval strikes from the sea.
While Luna Dial launches rather covert attacks from unexpected angle to sneak in and cause disrupt in bases, Flowering Night is oversaturation bombing, using hypersonic strikes to cause panic in Dixie ranks and act as SEAD, preventing them from reacting, allowing our operations to pass.
From our air bases, maximum distance estimated distance is ~2000 km, and the closest is ~250 km. Our main weapon in this case is LRWH, 20 Mach missile with 3500 km range. By launching them from the base, we can reach our targets in 8,5 minutes, making it highly improbable to react. With overall payload capability of ~ 1,9 kiloton, we can launch ~1000 LRHW. However, due to LRWH being most suited for long-range attacks (from 750km), 750 LRHW will be launched from the air, targeting Dixie air bases, locations of HM-2 and other high-priority targets. Rest will be using 1000 JSM, striking at range of 550 km at advancing forces and bases in Alabama and Tennessee, and 800 MALD-X, overwhelming Dakotan air defense.
Mainly, bases and forces close to MAU border in Deep South will be struck by artillery. 250 of Phantoms and 200 of PSM will launch at Dixie air bases, army depots, advancing forces and HM-2.
3 of the MAU's 7 Ohio-class SSGNs will strike from Gulf of Mexico ASAP. They will be equipped with UGM-190 Sea Phantom hypersonic missiles (22 per submarine, 66 total). Concurrent with the strikes against the missile fields and Midwestern air bases, the Sea Phantoms will be deployed against all in-range Dixie air bases and these army installations EXCEPT the right- and left-most ones. They are as follows:
  • Fort Polk (LA)
  • Fort Rucker (AL)
  • Anniston Army Depot (AL)
  • Redstone Arsenal (AL)
  • Pine Bluff Arsenal (AK)
[M] Just for clarity to whoever runs this, the right and leftmost icons on the map are bases owned by me and pepsi, respectively. I won't be targeting these for obvious reasons but I couldn't crop them out of the picture and have it still be readable. [/M]
Overall, combination of these three operations in a decapitation strike should leave Dakota without nuclear arsenal and without base infrastructure, allowing our ground forces to destroy forces by ensuring air superiority.

Operation Rainbow Gatekeeper

While our bomber force will conduct their alpha strike, we need to ensure air superiority over MAU. We hope to scramble our air force before Dixie, in order to overwhelm them with superior numbers and superior quality. This will be the first test of our power multyplying system, and we hope it will pass greatly.
We estimate Dixie overall force at 270 F-35, 155 4th generation fighters, 24 bombers. This is almost everything they have, but it's pitiful compared to MAU. 264 F-35C, 432 F-35A and 30 F-35B without recent Texan deliveries, 79 F-22, 1000 Skyborg drones, B-21 arsenal planes and 180 naval aviation 4th gen planes. Moreover, with battle going on for MAU airspace, we will have a major advantage of having radars and A2AD, allowing us to hit harder.
Mainly, we will scramble our F-22 fleet and support it with F-35 air wings from nearby 4 carriers and F-35A on standby - 148 F-35C and 144 F-35. The fleet will be supported by 750 Skyborgs and 10 B-21 arsenal planes.
Forming a defensive formation, our fighters will blend in with Skyborgs, with B-21 in the rear. With 50 Skyborg recon configuration comparable to F-22 in radar capabilities due to sharing radar module, we can detect fighters from safe range, allowing F-35 and F-22 to launch JATM from safer distance, highlighted by ground radars. The main course, first time in history, will be given to arsenal planes. Each of B-21 will carry 120 JATM (total contribution 1200 JATM), which is an enormous part of overall payload - F-22 will carry 6 JATM and 2 Peregrines (474 JATM and 158 Peregrines), F-35 will carry same (1752 JATM and 584 Peregrines), and Skyborgs will carry 1 JATM and 1 Peregrine (700 JATM and 700 Peregrines), making total loadout 4126 JATM and 1442 Peregrines. With their considerable range, we should be able to annihilate anything coming from Dakota, provided that those fighters and not ASF only, but also committing CAS and strikes, meaning less A2A loadout. In case of hostile attack, Skyborgs, standing in the front and around fighters, will intercept the missile and provoke locking on to them, supported by EW measures.
On the ground, Patriots and Avengers will do whatever possible to destroy coming aircraft, concentrating on 4th gen and bombers, while 300 ATHENA laser point defense will provide cover against munitions and advancing missiles.
Meanwhile, our Aegis Ashore systems will provide us with additional coverage and SM-6 missile coverage, totaling 294 SAM.

Operation Ice Fairy of the Lake

The MAU's unchallenged naval supremacy will be leveraged in the Gulf of Mexico to set the stage for an amphibious invasion of Louisiana.
Ship Quantity Embarkment / Air Wing (Per Ship)
Nimitz-class Aircraft Carrier 2 72x F-35C Lightning II, 2x E/A-18G Growler, 2x E-2C Hawkeye
Wasp-class Amphibious Assault Ship 4 1x Marine Expeditionary Unit
Ohio-class SSGN 4 -
Virginia-class Flight III SSN 2 -
Ticonderoga-class Guided Missile Cruiser 1 -
Arleigh Burke-class Flight IIA Destroyer 7 -
Avenger-class Mine Countermeasures Vessel 1 -
A Marine Expeditionary Unit consists of the following:
Unit Quantity
Infantry (Marines) 2200
Landing Craft Utility 4
Light Armored Vehicle 16
Assault Amphibious Vehicle 15
M777 Towed Howitzer 6
AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopter 6
MV-22B Osprey Tiltrotor 12
CH-53E Super Stallion Transport Helicopter 4
Ram 1500 63
Our goal is to destroy all and any combat surface vehicles of Dixie, while also preventing submarines to escape. Carrier aviation will be utilized to ensure air superiority over the fleet and Dakotan coast, with backups being dispatched from Eglin AFB or elsewhere as required should this superiority be challenged. Civilian fleet is left untouched.
SEAD operations will be conducted against the Dakotan Sixth Division, garrisoned in Mobile, Alabama for some reason, and following their path to our border. The Ohio-class SSGNs accompanying the blockade will be equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles (616 total), which will be deployed against Sixth Division targets identified by AWACS and drone surveillance, with the goal being complete eradication of the Sixth Division. Following the initial cruise missile strikes, MAU Black Company will begin moving west towards Alabama to counterattack and push them back.
Once the limited stretch of Dakotan coastline and area within the blockade has been secured, with all enemy ships either surrendering or being sunk, the amphibious invasion of Louisiana will begin. The objective of the amphibious invasion is to secure New Orleans and the strip of coast between the westernmost extent of the Florida panhandle and the Dakota-FRA border. As amphibious forces move in from the south on the coastline of Louisiana, Black Company will move westward, pushing the front line across Alabama and Mississippi to meet up with the amphibious forces to the west of New Orleans. The exact location of the four independent amphibious landings will be based on geographical features and suitability of the soil to support military equipment. The final locations will likely be west of New Orleans as the area to the south is considered too marshy for effective amphibious operations.
Air support will be provided to the advancing forces by Black Company's air component as well as the carrier air wing deployed with the blockade.
The amphibious forces and black company will expand the MAU-controlled beachhead to here, at which point they will focus entirely on defending the beachhead from possible Dakotan pushback. As this represents a great strategic interest to Dakota in the form of their only coastline, significant resistance is expected. This also provides us with opportunity to secure Dakotan territory while they are advancing, creating a salient.
Dakota's 5th division, garrisoned at Maxwell Air Force Base, will likely present major resistance to the amphibious landing. No incursions will be made by MAU forces inland, instead waiting for the 5th division to attempt a push south to either break the connected beachhead after its formation or to assist 6th division in defending from the initial amphibious assault. In either case, MAU's Blue Company will begin a southwestern movement to encircle the 5th division and any possible remnants of the 6th division. If all is executed correctly, 5th division will be trapped between the dug-in beachhead and Blue Company, and will be forced to surrender Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Operation Group Necrofantasia

Overall, our land game is divided in three operations - successfully defend the border and surrounding areas until air superiority is won and bombers conduct strikes against advancing forces, counterattack, and push towards Dixie inland.
With our divisions prepared and located at the border, we also need to consider that it's a small part of overall army. While our Companies are ready to strike, army will be mobilized to follow up.
One of our major advantages, outside of terrain and home advantage, is technology. Dakotan exosuits won't come in until late 2036, while AWP is long since ready, with 15k suits and 30K Coomer drones. What's more important is the infantry equipment. Dixie hasn't done anything with their rifles. We have smart self-guiding ammunition since late 20s. With sensors and network-centric combat, we massively outrange the infantry, and with flying armed drones we can kill Dixie soldiers en masse, when it comes to leg infantry and urban warfare. availability of exosuits allows us to sustain fire and protect the vanguard.
Dixie boasts about their tiny drones, but it's quite pitiful against MAU. MAU, after significant expansion, is the most protected force from drones. Our troops carry DroneGuns, our vehicles equipped with anti-drone modules, our cities are covered in net of stationary drone defenses, and our drones carry them too.
This, coupled with our cyberdefensive measures, should efficiently protect us against LAWs. If possible, we will also conduct EW as per capabilities of our cyberwarfare and equipment.
On ground, 200 ATHENAS will engage against drones and munitions falling on our troops, providing additional degree of cover.
In air, we will rely on A-10 Warthog, F-35A in air-to-ground loadout and helicopters to provide comprehensive CAS. With introduction of AGM-179 JAGM replacing BGM-71 TOW, AGM-114 Hellfire, and AGM-65 Maverick, we will be able to get major superiority over Dakotan armor and vehicles - longer range and better navigation will give us an edge. Outside of JAGM, we will mainly use SDB II to destroy armor and advancing troops from long range. Mortar and artillery fire will obviously be present, now linked with battlenetworks of AWP to provide pinpoint accuracy of strikes.
Outside of technological advantage, we also possess numerical advantage. Dixie has 500 tanks rolling, we have 1000 in Army and 250 in the Corps. We have more troops, more vehicles and more equipment, which makes defense much easier, as it's extremely hard to break superior force on the defensive.
What is the most important part of the operation is lack of mechanization of Dixie forces. Overall, their push has 100000 infantry troops and less than 1000 vehciles capable to transport troops, while a single MAU Company has 12000 infantry occupying 1030 vehicles, not counting helicopters, which will be less useful in MAU air superiority environment. As a boon, MAU has 500 MUTT UGV - carrier unmanned vehicles delivering supplies through the front, which will speed up our mobile forces significnatly, allowing to outmaneuver and outflank Dixie. This is combined with logistics unrivaled by anyone on the planet, with dedicated supercomputer keeping track of status of the campaign and delivering supplies where they are needed most.
Additional advantage is battlenetwork and upgraded Bradley Battle Command Vehicle. By keeping updated of our situation in real-time with major assistance from our bases, we can coordinate troops on tactical and strategic level, getting major advantage over soon to be disorganized Dixie troops.

Army Group North - Operation "A Maiden's Illusionary Funeral"

Gold Company is located in an advantageous position to resist a Dakotan push from the north. Our goal is to push them from Pitt while they are advancing into the Forest, while using our air component (as a part of operation Rainbow Gatekeeper) to destroy their air force, then move north from Pitt to close them within the area, cut off supply and destroy them, putting them between Gold Company and mobilized Army reinforcements. Due to the size of invasion (next to non-existent) and size of our Companies, we can send a small detachment to mop up Northern Group and counterattack at Ohio, moving swiftly through undefended state and seizing Columbus, Cleveland, Wright-Patterson AFB and Cincinnati, connecting to KY and encircling Army Group Centre.

Army Group Centre - Operation "Border of Life"

Meanwhile, our Red Company will be engaging Army Group Centre from the North. Located right behind the river, Red Company will be tasked with defense of the area before either crushing Army Group Centre and going into counterattack or waiting for reinforcements from Superior and Gold Company. Thanks to earlier preparations and closed border, all our bridges are already rigged with explosives. Depending on the status of the demining operations from Dixie, we will either blow them up the moment Dixie is crossing the river, taking vanguard with the bridge and leaving army group unable to advance, or somewhere in the middle of the process, cutting them off supplies and mopping them up, before counterattacking. Due to concentration of our forces in Fort Knox, Big Four Bridge will not be destroyed unless nessessary, instead opting to push Dixie from it by overwhelming force, and later, after demining, use it to cross into Indiana and link with Gold Company. After counterattack, Red Company will push into Midwest, as far as Indianapolis, Saint Louis border, and Springfield.

Army Group South -Operation "Lunatic Princess"

Dixie plan is to concentrate their forces at Tennessee and push into Carolinas and Virginia. Our goal is to stall the push while our forces are encircling undefended areas and army reinforcements are moving to assist Blue, Black and White Companies.
We don't have Companies on the VA-TN border, but we have Green Company on the border with TN - something which isn't attacked by Dixie. It's objective is to rush towards Nashville (70 km from Ft. Campbell), connect and secure border with Georgia by seizing Chattanooga, cutting off both northern and southern operations from supply and concentrating forces on breaking Northern push. Then, reinforcements from Fort Lee and Front Bragg, as well as army bases from Maryland, WW, NE and entire Northern MAU should meet it from the other side, encircle and destroy the invasion force.
Southern push receives similar treatment - with their supply run is broken before they even manage to ceize Atlanta, we will use Blue Company to push into Montgomery, Birmingham, and connect at Chattanooga, pushing back their defenses (as per operation "Ice Fairy of the Lake") cutting off southern push from all sides, allowing army reinforcements and White Company from Fort Gordon, Fort Stewart and Fort Jackson to break southern push. Southern Group is a major target of our bombing campaign, which makes the battle even harder for Dixie.
Meanwhile, Black company will connect with Marines in Lousisiana and push north to take Fort Rucker and Southern Alabama, meeting retreating forces and encircling them.
After breaking down their defenses and offenses, while taking most of Midwest, we can push to relatively undefended Dakota.

Battle of Atlanta - Operation Capital City of Flowers in the Sky

Generally, we expect several of our major cities to fall under siege of advancing Dixie troops. Overall, they are entering three megalopolices - Great Lakes megalopolis, Piedmont Atlantic Megaregion, and Northeast megalopolis. Moreover, several of their campaigns rely on taking major cities - namely Atlanta, Charlotte, Louisville, Pitt.
Push into heavily urbanized region without preparation is a suicide, and we will remind them why.
While Pitt has Gold Company, Charlotte has White Company and Louisville has Red Company, Atlanta is least prepared to invasion, due to it's Company located south. Still, we will prepare urban resistance in most cities on path, named and unnamed, and prepare unbreaking resistance. Thankfully, Dixie is not mechanized, is going into area heavily contested by air superiority and heavily armed citizens.
One of our first priorities is evacuation of citizens and mobilizing resistance. National Guard and reservists are called:
  • Georgia National Guard will reinforce their garrisons, move and prepare for the Battle of Atlanta.
  • Pennsylvania NG will assist with defense of the Pitt
  • Virginias, Carolinas, and KY NGs will provide us with defense of the urban areas in their states.
Overall, while NG deployments are not numerous, and not as well-armed with vehicles and tanks, they are still highly trained, have smart rifles, know their territory and are responsible for evacuation and holding the line.
Outside of NG, mobilization of volunteers will be ongoing in Atlanta. Mainly including police officers, SWAT teams, and verified volunteers will build the barricades, prepare ambushes and defend their homecity. With National Guard equipped with anti-tank and anti-air equipment against vehicles and helicopters, police armed with smart rifles, and volunteers with their own weapons, they can provide significant resistance to invasion force until Air Force breaks the spirit of Dixie and Army breaks their assholes.
Dakota relies on their drones for recon and attack. However, our cities are under protection of 10000 of upgraded DroneSentrys. Providing us with some EW against radiodetonated munitions and drones, they are present in significant quantities in Atlanta - major city on the border. Thus, drones will be downed or EWd as per above-mentioned.

Operation Maiden's Capriccio

In order to protect our citizens from Dixie nuclear attack, we will mobilize our entire ABM.
In Fortress Atlantic III, the Department of War purchased 40 THAAD systems and 250 MIM-104F Patriot systems. Aside from the 12 deployed to defend forward-operating Atlantic Army units, the remaining 28 THAAD are deployed to the following locations:
Location Number
New York City 3
Washington 2
Philadelphia 1
Boston 1
Baltimore 1
Norfolk 1
Charlotte 1
Atlanta 1
Jacksonville 1
Orlando 1
Tampa 1
Miami 1
Santo Domingo 1
Puerto Rico 1
Pittsburgh 1
The Patriot systems will be deployed alongside THAAD in a 1:10 ratio, i.e. 1 THAAD = 10 Patriot. Alongside the Aegis Ashore and Ground-Based Midcourse Defense systems operated by the Strategic Air Command, the MAU should be blanketed by a high-quality ABM and air defense network and thus impervious to nuclear strikes. The MAU's vast navy will be employed for BMD in coastal cities. All Alreigh Burke and Ticonderogas not engaged in Africa and the Gulf will patrol the seas. With 75% of VLS taken by SM-3, we wield more than 3000 SM-3 missiles. Being rated to surely destroy IRBM and likely to destroy ICBM, we can hope to destroy whatever remains of Dixie nuclear arsenal. By having early warning radars facing inwards and knowing trajectories and timings, we can strike SM-3 the second silos are open or even before that, hoping to use SM-3 preemptively. Overall, SM-3 are a safe bet against HM-2, and can majorly assist against any ICBM attack.
Despite the confidence in our defense systems, measures will be undertaken to protect MAU civilians. They will be instructed to move to the lowest possible points in their homes, underneath doorways or strong furniture, and those outside will be instructed to move indoors. This will be achieved through a purported 'nuclear missile defense test', billed as a nationwide practice opportunity in case of a nuclear strike. No indications will be made that the threat of nuclear war is imminent. These instructions will be relayed through mobile phones, smart home equipment, computers, billboards, and any other communications infrastructure accessible to FEMA.

Operation Flowering Night

While we are moving our forces, we also need to perform comprehensive EW.
The Atlantic Navy's five squadrons of E/A-18G Growlers will conduct electronic warfare operations alongside EC-130H Compass Calls operated by the Atlantic Air Force. Electronic warfare aircraft will be deployed as needed for SEAD operations across the entire theatre. They will provide radar cover and jam enemy targeting systems, which will be destroyed by accompanying F-35s or B-21s. SEAD is considered a top priority and will be conducted wherever anti-air emplacements are identified before the commencement of land or other air operations.
Ideally, initial SEAD sorties will cripple Dakotan air defence during the fight and ensure total MAU supremacy in the skies. Our own air defence installations will be guarded against SEAD through placement under cover and within difficult terrain and prioritizing destruction of enemy electronic warfare aircraft. Being deep in the country, our AWACS and EW will be safe from AA.
Once Air superiority has been won, our AWACS and EW will move towards first Dakotan troops, performing EW against their forces, and then onwards at defensive positions, supported by fighter escort, breaking down defenses. Combined with our cyberwarfare operations, we will be able to cause a serious dent in Dakotan network before they switch to offline.

2020.06.20 21:32 vivitar83 Can't get more than 50 down on WiFi (RB4011 + wAP AC)

2.4 Speed test: https://imgur.com/a/7A4PAbL 5Ghz Speed test: https://imgur.com/a/Dvn8bNg Wired Speed test: https://imgur.com/a/FOW6b13
I'm getting terrible download speed with my RB4011 + wAP AC. I've tried multiple different solutions with no luck on improving the download speed.
My config is based on this setup: https://github.com/hallzhallz/Articles/blob/maste2020-04-25%20Mikrotik%20hEX%20S/README.md
What am I missing? I've tried putting every option in for 5ghz and running it as least with as few settings as possible. This is about the best throughput I can get. /system resources monitor shows nothing being pegged on my RB4011 or the wAP. I've searched and searched and tried combinations of everything I've found, borked my network and had to restore from backup several times and had to hold the reset button of shame once lol.
My export hide-sensitive is below... Any assistance is greatly appreciated! I sanitized my SSIDs and serial # but everything else is there.

2020.06.18 16:47 efa___ The Unsolved Murder of Malvina Krutz -- In January 1958, an unassuming Indianapolis housewife is found brutally beaten and drowned in her bathtub, but police are baffled by "too many clues" and the identity of the "Bathtub Slayer" remains a mystery to this day.

Malvina Krutz
At just about 5pm on the evening of January 29, 1958, 48-year-old Charles E. Krutz arrived home to 5268 Guilford Avenue, a respectable 1 1/2-story home in a quiet neighborhood in Indianapolis's North Side. He had spent the day caught up in seemingly endless meetings and business calls for his job as a sales manager with the Southern Transportation Company and was looking forward to a home-cooked meal and a relaxing evening with his wife and son. Indeed, ten-year-old Charles Leland Krutz, Jr. -- nicknamed "Buddy" -- had already been home from school for about an hour and a half at that point, and was fully engrossed in the evening's episode of "Wild Bill Hickok."
As Charles crossed the room, he asked Buddy if his mother was home. Although Malvina Krutz was a housewife, she was currently overseeing significant renovations to the family home in the aftermath of a house fire the previous December, so it wasn't unusual for her to dash out during the day to meet with a contractor, pick out a new paint color, or deal with the seemingly never-ending pile of insurance paperwork. But that didn't seem to be the case today. Buddy told his father that, when he had come home for lunch earlier that day, his mother had told him not to worry about his newspaper route that evening, that she would take care of it for him. That's where she had been since he'd gotten home, he assumed.
But any relief that Charles might have felt at this explanation was dashed with Buddy's next remark: "I don't like the looks of the bedroom." When questioned further, the boy told his father that, when he had gotten home from school that afternoon, his model airplanes and other toys had been "in disarray" on and around the chest of drawers in his bedroom. Confused and a bit uneasy, Charles hung up his coat and proceeded to the bathroom to wash his hands, after which he would get to the bottom of what his wife was up to.
But his questions were answered more quickly than Charles could have anticipated. Upon opening the bathroom door, he noticed that the shower curtain -- which was usually left open -- had been pulled shut. With a pit in his stomach, he slid the curtain back to find the lifeless body of his wife, 41-year-old Malvina Krutz, lying on her right side, submerged in water. Her head was towards the faucet, and her legs had been bent at the knees. The bathtub had been filled to the overflow valve and the faucet turned off. The water was still warm when Charles came upon the scene, as was Malvina's body. She had cuts to the inside of her lips and was later noted as having bruises on her left eye, on her chin, on each arm above the elbow, and on her left lower leg above the knee. She was wearing a white "sweater-type blouse" that had been torn in the back, a white lightweight cardigan sweater (also torn), panties rolled down to her knees, and a pair of sneakers. A soaking wet pair of torn women's toreador pants -- presumably removed from Malvina's body after she was submerged -- was later found inside-out on the floor of Buddy's bedroom. The young boy -- who chanced not to have used the bathroom since arriving home at 3:35pm -- had unwittingly been just a few feet away from the devastating scene for well over an hour.
Charles called the police, who quickly arrived at the scene to begin their investigation. As a group of detectives pored over the Krutz home in search of any clues, other officers began questioning Charles and slowly piecing together the events of Malvina's last day.
Nothing about Malvina Krutz's life seemed to portend the brutal violence of her death. Neighbors described her as "typically Southern, of warm and friendly nature," while close friends used words like "forceful," "vivacious," and "active" when recounting memories of the late housewife, church worker, and PTA volunteer. She suffered from a chronic back injury, but that hadn’t seemed to hinder her involvement in community initiatives. Mildred Warning, who had actually been to Malvina's home on the day of her murder, recalled her as "a busy person, active in so many things," and mentioned that Malvina was particularly proud of the work that was being done on her home. In fact, getting the chance to see the progress that had been made on the home renovation was part of the reason Mildred had stopped by the Krutz house in the early afternoon of January 29th, along with Florence Cubert, another friend of Malvina's from Northwood Christian Church.
Mildred recalled, "She had been after us to come and see the work being done on her home. She really was proud of it." But, aware of Malvina's busy and often unpredictable schedule, the friends had called the Krutz home at 12:45pm to let her know that they were coming over. However, rather than hearing her friend's voice on the other end of the line, Mildred was met by a man answering the phone. According to Mildred, "It wasn't her husband. I know his voice. I got the impression this man was a workman." She asked if she could speak to Mrs. Krutz, to which the man allegedly responded, "Well, ah…" A bit puzzled, Mildred asked the strange man, who she told police "spoke courteously," to pass along the message to Malvina that she and Florence would be coming by the house shortly. In response, she heard Malvina's voice call out in the background, "Tell Mrs. Warning that I have to take Buddy to school and will pick her up at 1:30." (Another source reports this statement as simply, "Tell her not to pick me up today.")
About an hour later (1:40pm - 1:45pm), Mildred and Florence arrived at the Krutz home, having ignored Malvina's ambiguous requests. As they were driving up, the friends apparently saw a man run away from the house, get into Malvina's 1955 Buick hardtop, and drive away. This certainly seemed a bit odd, but the women dismissed it as a workman taking the car to pick up building materials, which happened not infrequently. After knocking at the front door and receiving no answer, Mildred and Florence went around to the back door, which they found to be slightly ajar. Letting themselves inside, the two friends waited in the living room for approximately 20 minutes before departing, leaving behind a "chiding note" written to Malvina and a coat for her son.
The only other hint that something strange had been going on with Malvina that day came from Buddy. Despite spending most of the day at the nearby School 55, Buddy had come home to eat lunch, per his typical routine. He had arrived at approximately 12:10pm and recalled that the car was in the garage upon his arrival. As Buddy poured himself a glass of milk and hastily ate the sandwich that had been left for him on the kitchen counter, he heard his mother's voice calling from the bathroom. She told him not to worry about his newspaper route that afternoon, as she would take care of it. Pleasantly surprised, Buddy finished his meal and returned to school. According to Buddy, his mother had still been in the bathroom at the time he had left.
**Several sources refer to Buddy as "the last person to have seen Malvina" before her death. This may be semantics, but I wanted to note that I haven't come across any explicit confirmation that he *saw* her while home for lunch, only that they talked while she was in the bathroom.
In the early hours of the investigation, much attention was paid to the various workmen who had been in and out of the Krutz home over the previous weeks. The home had been damaged in a fire on December 16 of the previous year, and Malvina and Charles had hired the Walter DeLacy contracting firm to oversee repairs. Police identified four particular workmen who were confirmed to have been in the house on the day of the murder, but all four men were cleared after questioning, with the last two released from interrogation at 5am on the morning of the 30th. Undeterred, investigators continued to question any and all workmen who had been involved with the Krutz renovation over the past month and a half. This proved more fruitful; on January 31, an officer reported, "we have questioned all of the workmen, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are all cleared. There is a difference." He went on to elaborate that one man in particular had been, "'unable to account satisfactorily" for his whereabouts during the slaying.
Another focus of the early investigation was Malvina's car -- a two-tone white-over-gray, hard-top 1955 Buick. Both Buddy and the neighborhood's milk delivery man confirmed that the car was in the Krutz garage as late as noon on January 29th. At approximately 1:45pm, Mildred and Florence saw someone get into the car, back out of the Krutz’s driveway, and head north on Guilford Avenue. Upon further questioning, neither woman was able to identify the man who had been driving, nor could they confidently recall anything about his appearance. However, a 16-year-old neighbor who told police that he also saw this man driving away described the driver as Black.
Despite a police dragnet allegedly being dispatched "immediately" after the murder was reported, it was not until the following morning that Malvina's car was found a mere 11 blocks from her home, left abandoned at 4926 North Meridian Street. The keys were not in the car and were not recovered from a search of the area. Curiously, a workman in the area of 49th and Meridian claimed that the car had been parked there since the day before the murder. Two "domestic servants" employed nearby told police that they had actually first seen the car the morning before the body had been found, and that it had stayed there through the afternoon until the morning it was found by police. It is unclear what to make of these reports, as they are inconsistent with the testimony of Mildred, Florence, Buddy, and others, yet seem to have been independently corroborated by at least two observers. Another domestic servant recalled seeing a "light-skinned Negro" driving the Krutz car to the drop-off point at some point during the afternoon of the 29th, after which "the man got out, wiped off the door handle with a handkerchief and walked south." Newspaper reports describe this story as "unconfirmed."
Back on Guilford Avenue, investigators were undertaking an extensive search of the Krutz home. Robbery was quickly ruled out as the motive; Malvina's purse was found hanging from a doorknob in the house with money still inside, and $260 was found undisturbed in a dresser drawer. Further, Charles confirmed that no jewelry or other valuables had been taken from the home. Three fingerprints that didn't match members of the Krutz family were allegedly collected from two doors in the house, including a "clear fingerprint of a left thumb" taken from the bedroom door. This print was never successfully matched to anyone questioned in relationship to the murder, nor were any matches found in local criminal records, civil files, or in the State Police database.
Perhaps the strangest clue in the case was described as "a yellow pencil with strands of hair embedded in the wood." It's not clear exactly where the pencil was recovered, but investigators remarked that the small cuts to Malvina's forehead and scalp "could have been caused by a pencil in the coat or shirt pocket of the killer." Charles Krutz denied ever having seen the pencil, which was inscribed with "White County REMC, Monticello, Ind.", and it was eventually discovered that thousands of similar pencils had been distributed over the past few years by the Rural Electric Membership Corporation, who used the pencils in their offices and branches. In fact, REMC Business Manager Geraldine Brewer remarked that similar pencils had been passed out at the company’s annual meeting, and that they could also be found in the vestibule of the company's office for anyone to pick up. Although investigators stated that they planned to perform a spectrograph test to identify the source of the hair, any such results were not publicly reported.
With regards to the body itself, "extensive testing" revealed that, despite the positioning of the body and its suggestive state of undress, Malvina had not been sexually assaulted. Her official cause of death was determined as drowning, and Coroner Roy B. Storms hypothesized that she had been struck by a blow to the face or head (sufficient to cause a brain hemorrhage) before being placed in the filled bathtub, after which her lungs filled with water. As Storms described, "She had a blow above the left eye. I don't think she fell into the tub. I think it was murder. She had abrasions on her lip, a small cut. She either struck something or somebody struck her. I think somebody struck her." On February 17, 1958, Storms officially concluded that Malvina had been murdered, ruling out any remaining possibility that the death had been the result of some tragic accident.
Investigators also noted "signs of struggle" in Buddy's bedroom, where, in addition to Malvina's torn, wet pants, two pillows had been found on the floor, covered in blood spots and mucous stains. One pillow was near the foot of the bed, while the other was described as positioned between the bed and the wall "as for a pallet" with a chenille bedspread beside it. Two shag rugs had also been found underneath Malvina's body when it was recovered from the bathtub, leading investigators to hypothesize that an initial attack had occurred in the bedroom, after which the attacker had laid an injured or unconscious Malvina on this makeshift cot before carrying her into the bathroom, during which the attacker accidentally gathered up the rugs along with Malvina's body. Disturbingly, investigators pointed to a chrome towel hanger that had been broken off the bathroom wall and found in the washbowl as evidence that Malvina had likely regained consciousness and struggled with her attacker as he moved her into the bathtub. A blood-stained towel was found behind a kitchen door that lead to the backyard and basement, and Charles told police that Malvina's car keys would have been kept in a "plainly visible" bowl on a nearby kitchen cabinet for the attacker to grab on his way out of the house.
Despite the fact that over a dozen of the Krutz's neighbors would have allegedly had a view of the home on the day of the murder, only one neighbor (the 16-year-old who saw a man driving away) reported witnessing anything unusual. Indeed, even though seven people were known to have been in and out of the Krutz home that day (four workmen, Buddy, Mildred, and Florence), none of them had been seen by any of their close neighbors, with the exception of Mildred and Florence, who had been seen by a neighbor living across the street. Of note, two nearby dogs who were said to "bark loudly at persons in the Krutz yard" were not heard barking on the day of the crime. Even years into the investigation, police maintained that they "have always thought that someone who lived in the neighborhood or who passed by the Krutz house that January 29 may have seen the murder, but no one would come forth with information." However, this sentiment is undermined by a newspaper report claiming that only one of the family's four closest neighbors actually confirmed that they had been questioned by investigators.
Several suspects were picked up, questioned, and released in fairly quick succession over the first few days of the investigation. Their names were not publicly released, so it is not entirely clear how many individual suspects were questioned over the course of the investigation, nor which reports refer to the same suspect being questioned multiple times. One man, described as a "strong lead" was arrested on the night of January 30th, but released after a few hours. Although his identity was withheld, he was described as "a workman who has done fire damage repair work on the Krutz home recently." The next afternoon, a hitchhiker and apparent "ex-convict from Alabama" was picked up in connection to the case, but he was also released fairly quickly. A "62-year-old junk collector" was questioned, as were four paper hangers who had recently worked on the Krutz renovation. However, the fingerprints found in the home were not a match for any of these individuals.
Malvina did not have any known enemies, nor had she, to anyone's knowledge, ever been threated or "bothered with prowlers." Detectives reported that they were looking deeper into her background "on the theory that she might have had acquaintances unknown to her husband." Although two new suspects were reported around this time, it is unclear if these suspects actually did have such a personal connection to the victim. In addition, investigators began to question local sex offenders, with Captain Michael Smiley explaining their reasoning: "we know from experience that a peeping tom can become a rapist and maybe even become a murderer." Police questioned one "close friend" of Malvina's who was confined to Methodist Hospital; although they did not release the woman's name or the reason she was questioned, investigators did report that she "could not shed light" on the case. A "former salesman on fuel saving devices" who had worked with Malvina "about 18 months ago" was also reportedly questioned by police, as was "a man who was with a workman at the time some repairs were made." An unnamed woman was also questioned in early February but was released after passing a lie detector test.
On February 3, 1958, lead investigators Det. Sgt. Earl Booth and Det. Sgt. Stanley McDonald made a statement to the public that "things are beginning to fit together. It's not so confusing now." McDonald further hinted at valuable information that had not been made public, claiming that "things [were] liable to start popping" in the days to come. However, the same day, Chief of Police Frank Mueller made the controversial decision to suspend the investigation for two days so that the detectives involved could attend a trial in nearby Franklin. Mueller framed this brief hiatus in a positive light, responding that it "may be well" to get the chance to "gain new perspective on the case." However, members of the public called for the Franklin trial to be postponed to avoid such a disruption, and felt that investigators were not devoting sufficient attention to the case. One letter to the editor, published in The Indianapolis News, lamented, "Under Reilly [the previous Chief of Police], it was normal for investigators to run around the clock. But in the Krutz case, it appears detectives work on it if there's nothing else pressing -- such as a report for the chief or a trial at Franklin." The letter concludes on an even more incisive note: "Perhaps this case calls for more than two men. Aren't there enough detectives to go around? Or could it be that our homicide division kicks the tough cases around until they get lost? Do they work on a case until pressure dies down and then hope the public will forget?"
Mueller rebutted these claims in an editorial the following day, reassuring the public that "the department has and will continue to check out every available clue" and claiming that "we will solve this case when we get all our evidence and clues sifted down." In response to the outcry over suspending the investigation, Mueller placed Detectives Robert Morrison and John Rudd on the case while Booth and McDonald were out of town. However, both officers were described in newspaper reports as "not homicide men, and inexperienced in that field," raising some concern about their appointment. Shortly thereafter, two Black officers -- Anthony Watkins and Oscar Donahue -- were assigned to the case with the task of interviewing members of the Black community who might respond more openly to questions from investigators of color. The two were highly esteemed by their peers, with one officer declaring, “if [the attacker] was a Negro, the pair would find him." However, both Watkins and Donahue were removed from the case after two days with little explanation.
One other major suspect was being considered in the first weeks of the Krutz investigation, and that was Charles Krutz himself. While it has become almost rote at this point for husbands or boyfriends to be viewed as likely early suspects in murders of women, the optics of this case were particularly suggestive. Shortly after Malvina's death, it was revealed that she had filed for divorce from Charles on January 13, 1958, citing "marital misconduct and gross and wanton negligence of conjugal duties" over a period of over ten years. A hearing was scheduled for January 17 regarding a restraining order, but both Malvina and Charles failed to appear in court, after which the divorce suit was dropped entirely. According to Charles, the couple had mutually decided to reconcile, and this claim was "partly confirmed" by Malvina's lawyer. The lawyer, who described Malvina as "a very frustrated woman," also reported having represented her in a previous divorce action in the early 1950s, although this was also dropped after an apparent reconciliation. As they had failed to appear in court on the 17th, the Krutz couple received a court order to appear on January 30, 1958. Malvina was killed one day before.
Charles did not deny this marital turmoil but was able to provide an alibi for his whereabouts the afternoon of the murder. Although he had spent most of the day at work at the Southern Transportation Co., his job as a sales manager had taken him away from the office for a little over three hours. Part of this time was allegedly spent visiting a friend, Charles Fleck, at his rooming house, as corroborated by both Fleck and Josephine Funke, his landlady. However, officials reported that "our detectives are not satisfied with the stories those two [Charles Krutz and Charles Fleck] gave" and asked both men to take a lie detector test. Krutz agreed but asked if the test could be postponed until after his wife's funeral, when he would be more composed. Furthermore, Patrolman James L. Mullen, one of the first officers on the crime scene, reported two discrepancies in Krutz's statements to police. First, while Krutz initially told Mullen that he had entered the house through the front door on the evening of the 29th, his later statements claimed that he had entered through the back door. Second, Krutz apparently told investigators that, upon arriving home, he had taken off his watch and jewelry, but hadn't yet changed his shirt by the time he found the body and called police. However, Mullen reported that the man's shirt had looked "unworn" when he had arrived at the Krutz home.
Regardless, on February 7, 1958, both Krutz and Fleck were cleared by lie detector testing, with police asserting that "nothing indicates they have any knowledge of the murder." Krutz was questioned for a total of 4.5 hours before being released, and reportedly "expressed a desire to continue helping with the investigation."
In the following days, police released information regarding mysterious phone calls allegedly made to Charles Krutz in the days following his wife's murder. Three anonymous calls had been received, all at night and all following the same pattern: a woman with a "slight southern accent" would ask "Is this Mr. Krutz?" and then break the connection after he responded affirmatively. As the workman who had spoked to Mildred Warning apparently also had a "slight southern drawl," police theorized that the two individuals may know one another. In fact, they even stated that the caller "might be in danger of her life," theorizing that "the woman caller knows the identity of the man who answered the telephone and if he is also the murderer, he may take steps to keep her from revealing his identity to the police." However, if this caller was ever identified, her identity was not shared publicly.
On the morning of February 19, 1958, police reported that Robert Smith, a 37-year-old self-employed painter and paper hanger, had been taken into custody. Smith, a married father of seven with no previous arrest record, had been the very first person questioned in the case, but had been released after providing an alibi. However, police revealed that Smith had been "under surveillance ever since," and that they had eventually received additional information that raised questions about his original story (though they would not reveal the specific nature of this information).Smith had worked in the Krutz house on January 23, 24 and 25, but claimed that he had been working at another North Side home on the afternoon of the murder. However, Det. Sgt. Booth reported that he had "absolute evidence to the contrary that shoots his story full of holes as to the time and places he was supposed to have been on January 29."
One critical inconsistency was an alleged sighting of Smith with Malvina "in her car and in a place of business" about a week before the murder. However, despite three witnesses claiming to have seen the two together, Smith denied that he had ever been in a car with Malvina or driven Malvina's car. It is suggested that the two were likely seen together while on an errand to shop for wallpaper, and Smith's reluctance to admit to being in her company likely had much to do with contemporary racial politics: this was less than three years after the lynching of Emmett Till, and Smith -- a Black man -- would undoubtedly be hyperaware of the danger of admitting to any kind of personal intimacy with a white woman.
When a lie detector test was administered on February 20, Smith was consistent in denying all knowledge of the crime and claiming that he had never spent time in Malvina's car or with her away from her home. Smith allegedly passed the lie detector test "on all points except one -- reports he was seen in an automobile within ten days before the murder." However, despite this one discrepancy, investigators considered the results sufficient proof of Smith's innocence. He was released the same day, with Capt. Smiley stating, "He's free. We won't need him anymore."
Just a few days later, on February 24, 1958, a local painter named Leroy Penick was brought before the Municipal Court in regard to Malvina Krutz's murder. According to investigators, Penick (also a Black man) had been "uncertain about dates throughout questioning," and his account of the day of the crime was described as "a maze of mixed-up time elements." Specifically, Penick claimed that he had spent January 29 painting a barbershop, but the shop's owners maintained that Penick had actually been there the previous day. After administering a lie detector test, police reported that Penick "continued to show deception [when] asked questions about the slaying or the scene of the crime," and he apparently had particularly strong reactions to questions about hitting Malvina and about having driven her car. However, Penick admitted to drinking the night before the test, which may have nullified the results. Furthermore, Det. Sgt McDonald reported that Penick had told him that "he had been arrested 18 times and knew results of a lie detector test won't stand up in court."
Investigators searched Penick's house in the hopes of finding yellow paint matching paint found on a rag left behind in Malvina's abandoned car. No evidence was found during the search (although, in a strange turn of events, police arrived to find the house "nearly 200 degrees" and "ready to burst into flames," eventually discovering that the oven had been left on when Penick had been taken into custody days earlier). A final attempt was made to compare paint on Penick's clothing the paint on the rag, but this analysis was inconclusive. On March 2, 1958, the case against Leroy Penick was dropped and he was released from custody, with no evidence ever directly linking him to the Krutz house in the days leading up to the murder.
Disturbingly, Leroy Penick was arrested four years later in relation to the brutal death of his live-in girlfriend, 27-year-old Carol Jean Martin. Penick originally claimed that another man was responsible for the violent beating, then changed his story to claim that she had accidentally slipped and fallen after arriving home drunk and picking a fight with him. On January 26, 1963, Penick was found guilty of second-degree murder and received an automatic life sentence. Although he was re-questioned about Malvina Krutz's murder, no further evidence suggested that he was connected to the slaying.
Over the following months, new leads in the Krutz case "slowed to a trickle." Even lead investigators Booth and McDonald were forced to admit, "We have come up with absolutely nothing." Desperate for clues, investigators collaborated with The Indianapolis Star, who published an offer of a $5000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction in Malvina's murder, as well as in three other local unsolved cases. The call was first announced in early April, and the deadline for receiving reward money was set as May 15, 1958. Initially, these efforts appeared wildly successful, with police reporting that most of the clues sent into The Star so far were related to the Krutz case.
A reader reportedly turned in a set of keys that had been found on North Meridian Street, but these were not a match to Malvina's still-missing keys. On April 11, police told the public that they had a "strong" suspect, and that they had received a tip the previous day that "may help to tighten up the network of evidence." A few days later, Inspector Robert Reilly released a statement that "an entirely new and interesting light [had] been shed on the investigation" by a letter received by The Star. He elaborated by saying that this new lead had "led to a belief of foul play" but that there remained "no motive evident." Another report referenced an anonymous call from a man who "knew something about the murder," but he was ultimately found to be unreliable, as he was unable to share any new information. Intriguingly, one of the final mentions of this hunt comes in a response to a previous tip published on April 16: "Attention Writer 8-8-52 -- What is the last name and address of the woman who was surprised by the intruder?"
On June 12, 1958, a 25-year-old man named James D. Rogers walked into the Gary, Indiana police department and turned himself in for allegedly forging checks and committing "several" armed robberies. Quickly, however, Rogers -- a former line cook -- began to hint at an ever darker past. He knew something about the murder of Malvina Krutz, but he wouldn't talk until police brought "a woman friend of his" to headquarters. Officials acquiesced, and Rogers told Gary PD that a friend of his, identified as a "house painter" had been Malvina Krutz's killer, while he had been at the Krutz home during the murder. Rogers was quickly transferred to the custody of Indianapolis investigators for further questioning, and Rogers changed his story: now, he claimed that he was Malvina's killer.
According to Rogers, he had flirted with Malvina earlier in the day at a North Side restaurant, after which she had invited him back to her home. Said Rogers, "I got mad at her and hit her in the side of the head with a clinched fist. She must have fainted because I don't think it knocked her out. I got scared but I tried to bring her to in the bedroom but couldn't. I thought she was dead then and so I half-picked her up and half-dragged her from the bedroom into the bathroom. After I got her into the bathroom, she wasn't even moving so I put her into the bathtub and then I turned the water on. I turned just the cold water on. But she still wouldn't come to." He then claimed to have left the house, driven away in Malvina's car, parked it, and walked 3 1/2 blocks south before "[throwing] the keys in a yard or vacant lot by a big tree."
Although investigators were excited by a new development in a case that was quickly growing cold, most remained reasonably dubious. According to Capt. Smiley, "For instance, he said after the murder he took her car and left in at 49th and Meridian, wiped the car off and dropped the keys by a tree. We have information that children found some keys, but we have never been able to locate the children or the keys. On the other hand, he claims that on the day of the murder he met this woman sometime in the morning at a café at 52nd and Keystone and went home with her. He says he was there until 3 o'clock in the afternoon, that he was in the bedroom with her when the boy came home for dinner. He says she slipped on a robe left the bedroom and fixed the boy's lunch, and then after the boy went to school, she came back." Smiley continued, "There are some things that don't check there. We will continue to question him."
The next day, investigators administered a lie detector test, noting that Rogers had provided inaccurate details about clothing, phone calls, and "many other small points." Further, Capt. Smiley reported that "with the exception of the car keys reportedly dropped near a tree, he could have read the rest of the murder details in newspapers." Indeed, after the lie detector test suggested deception, Rogers revealed that he had falsely confessed. He had been "sick, confused, unhappy and unsuccessful," leading him to implicate himself in the murder. But in reality, Rogers claimed, even though he hadn't committed the crime, he knew who did, and would give the killer's name to police the following day. He did eventually provide a name to police, but the man was quickly cleared. When confronted, Rogers provided the name of a man he now claimed to be Malvina's true killer, but this lead also led nowhere. After Rogers named a fourth alleged killer to police, a man he had apparently met in April, officials were forced to admit that, not only was Rogers "looking less and less like a prime suspect in the Krutz case," it seemed most likely he had no personal knowledge of the crime at all.
A few final clues trickled in over the months that followed. In July 1958, a second-hand tip was received about someone who "had seen a man going and coming from the Krutz home before the murder who seemed familiar to Mrs. Krutz." The suspect allegedly wore clothing "like that of a painter" and had used the Krutz car on occasion. If this man was even identified and questioned, his name was not publicly released. Det. Sgt. Booth used The Indianapolis Star to address readers who had submitted clues in the Krutz case, writing that "certain portions of the letter signed 'XXX' which was sent to the Indianapolis Star now seem to mesh with certain information I am trying to develop at this time," and "urged the writer to tell more about the man wearing gray coveralls.” He also referenced a recent clue suggesting that the slayer had been a "frequent companion of the dead woman."
In December 1960, Det. Sgt. McDonald released a statement regarding a "lost tip" in the Krutz slaying. According to McDonald, the tipster, identified only as "5000," had written a letter to The Star 2.5 years prior, during the period when reward money was being offered. Although it is unclear why this tip was initially overlooked, the full contents of the letter were published as follows:
"RE MALVINA KRUTZ: The same afternoon on the day of this murder I was in my car at 49th & Meridian heading west waiting for light to change when a slim very dark complexioned man with a mustache was locking car north of (Editor's Note: Writer could mean "Parked facing north on…") Meridian on west side of street. He ran like a speed racer south on Meridian just as light was changing. While crossing street he made a movement towards his cap (painter's type) but seems to toss something toward the west. Some days later making the same trip I drove slowly west on 49th as two small boys picked something out of street on south side of 49th west of Meridian. I heard one say 'Someone has lost their car keys.' I remember another car was parked on west side, Mer. about third house down"
Tips continued to trickle in, and Det. Sgt. Booth remained on the case for at least a few years, having allegedly read over all the evidence at least half a dozen times during his tenure. Between 200 and 250 people were interviewed in connection to the case, and even a year later, Booth apparently spent "75 percent of his time running down leads and tips and rechecking details in the case." But to no avail.
Despite the abundance of suspicious characters and suggestive clues, the case remains unsolved over fifty years later. The most complete theories of the case put forward by officials are that the killer "may have been a collector who came to the house on an errand and decided to pilfer the house upon finding the door unlocked and indications that no one was home" or that he "was someone Malvina knew slightly, and whose presence in the house was known to her." However, more troubling questions concern Malvina's behavior earlier in the day. One newspaper report mused over Malvina's strange behavior when her son came home for lunch: "Why did she stay in the bathroom? She had a reputation for being a good mother, always worrying over the welfare of her son. Was the killer in the house at that time?" Other questions concern the man who answered Mildred Warning's phone call: "If the man was the killer, why did he stay so late when he knew the women were coming? Why did he take a chance being seen in Mrs. Krutz's car? Why didn't the two women become suspicious under these circumstances?" Only a few of the many, many unanswered questioned looming over the still-unsolved "Bathtub Slayer" murder of Malvina Krutz.

2020.06.15 02:34 ResidentRunner1 If the US eventually builds a high-speed rail network, where are the best and worst spots to start?

A bit of a backstory. While not a train enthusiast, I do liike to make maps, so I have some relevance here. Anyway, you saw the title. It's one of the biggest debates in the US right now. Congress and the President aren't even doing a thing. Amtrak was even going to turn a profit this year but covid hit.
High-speed rail in the US, while gamechanging, would be incredibly difficult. There are only so many mountain passes a train can go through without tunneling, and to make matters worse, good luck with all the NIMBYs or property owners.
Anyway, here are some of my ideas and thoughts while browsing:
  1. Start a true high-speed rail that is easier to construct in Texas, the Midwest, Great Plains, and Southeast. All these regions are relatively flat, only mountainous if you head west, east, south, or north in the Southeast. I think the high-speed rail network should start here because, well, most cities are spaced out far enough where airplane flights are a bit short, and car drives are a bit long. Intercity rail & high-speed rail are perfect inbetween. A few examples of a "Chicago Hub Network":
  2. Chicago-Fort Wayne-Toledo-Detroit (possible extension to Toronto)
  3. Twin Cities-Rochester-Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago
  4. Kansas City-St. Louis-Chicago
  5. Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinnati
  6. Chicago-Fort Wayne-Toledo-Cleveland-Pittsburgh (with another branch heading to Buffalo)
  7. Cincinnati-Dayton-Columbus-Cleveland (cross-state corridor)
  8. Chicago-Indianapolis-Louisville
  9. Chicago-Quad Cities-Des Moines-Omaha
  10. Chicago-Michigan City-Grand Rapids
Another example would be Texas, which has a lot of highly-populated cities:
  1. Dallas-Fort Worth-Waco-College Station-Houston
  2. Dallas-Fort Worth-Waco-Austin-San Antonio-Laredo
  3. Amarillo-Lubbock-Abilene-Fort Worth-Dallas
  4. Houston-Corpus Christi-Harlingen-Brownsville
  5. Dallas-Fort Worth-Abilene-Midland-El Paso
Southeast would fit this very well. A new high-speed line, Southeast Regional, would head from DC to Atlanta via Richmond, St. Petersburg, Raleigh/NC Triangle, Greensboro, Greenville, or a different line, a coastal one, from DC to Miami via Richmond, St. Petersburg, Fayetteville, Florence, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami.
The West and Southwest, along with the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, face a few dilemmas. One, how the hell would high-speed rail cross the Continental Divide? Good luck in the winters, and man, the environmental-review process would be insanely long. Two, how can a high-speed train cross the Appalachians without having to go north along Lake Ontario or south via the Gulf of Mexico? Finally, Seattle-LA is going to be notoriously difficult, for the fact that seismic measures, steep mountain passes, and brutal winters will all be in the factor.
Feasibly, and personally, I think the first transcontinental high-speed rail route should run through Wyoming, then to SF via the Donner Pass. The rail line there in Wyoming doesn't curve as much as in Colorado, and the Continental Divide has a large flat section in the middle. Besides, while still worrying about winters, it's not going to have to run through one of the most scenic areas in the US. The Donner Pass, is not as bad as say, Tehachapi near LA or Deadman in Oregon, or even Snoqualmie in Washington State for that matter.
That is my opinion, and more comments are welcome. I'll try my best to answer them.

2020.06.14 23:33 DJRungeKutta Help with $1500 USD PC build for numerical analysis (no gaming required).

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I will need a computer for numerical analysis and lots of matrix manipulation at work. I will not be gaming on this PC at all so while a graphics card is useful (maybe?) since I'll need to be able to plug-in a couple of screens, I don't have any plans to install and play any games on this machine. This computer will however need to crunch though simulations and the like using python, julia, and Matlab.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
My budget is $1500 USD.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I plan on buying this PC within one-two weeks from today (e.g. by the end of July).
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)
I need everything but monitors,a keyboard, and a mouse for this PC. So off the top of my head this means I require: Tower, power supply, motherboard, CPU, memory (lots please!), HDD (SSD preferable), GPU, and a wireless network card. I also listen to a lot of music while I work so a audioports that I can plug headphones and speakers into would be a must.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
I am in Indianapolis, Indiana, and do not have access to a Micro Center location. If there are any other stores some locals could recommend, that would be fantastic.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I will be using two screens that are provided to me by my work place. I am travelling at the moment so can't tell you the exact model, but I know they require HDMI ports. I also have a keyboard and mouse from Amazon that seem to be pretty standard USB
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I'd be interested in overclocking down the line (a slight bump up in CPU speed probably doesn't hurt?) but don't have any plans or intentions to overclock straight away. If people think there are some easy gains to be made by overclocking whatever CPU is recommended, I'd be happy to do it. However, I'm not so interested in overclocking that I want to factor extreme cooling measures into the price of this build.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
An SSD would be great, as much memory as possible would also be great.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
I'll require both Wired and Wifi, no need to find the fastest match for the wireless router since the computer will mainly rely on the wired network.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No preferences, but I think a full tower would be best. This is a computer for the workplace so nothing too flashy.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No, a copy of Windows will be provided by my workplace.
Extra info or particulars:
N/A

Thanks very much for your help everybody!

OTHER: The build recommended to me in a previous thread ( https://www.reddit.com/buildmeapc/comments/f3s29f/help_with_1500_usd_pc_build_for_numerical/ ) has helped me so much my colleague would like his own build for the same budget! I'm guessing now that a few months have gone by, his PC will be a lot better than mine. Thanks for all the suggestions!

If I were in charge of making the US transit system better, I would implement the following transit systems:

Other honorable mentions would be the following routes, but these would be 90 MPH normal train routes that only leave once per day or 2 trains per day total:

The rest of the United States could be connected by bus and doesn't need specialty lines or the lines already exist.

2020.03.30 06:24 Shinyhubcaps AEW Dark - Top 10 Matches (with links!)

Hey Reddit!
Since so many are stuck inside with “shelter in place” orders, lots of you are watching YouTube, Netflix, and WWE Network (which, very coolly, unlocked most videos for non-paying accounts during this pandemic). I thought I’d do my part to share some of AEW Dark’s best matches, which is always free on YouTube, debuting new episodes each Tuesday night.
AEW Dark has been running since Dynamite debuted in early October 2019, but the views have been declining despite being free and having great content, ad-free and more digestible than a 2-hour show (most episodes are around 50 minutes including studio talk and recaps). Hopefully these matches can help new viewers dive into the product, while regular viewers can relive good moments, and we can all keep sane during these next few weeks!
Here’s my Top 10 countdown. I consulted WON and Cagematch.net for ratings but also compiled matches that I recall fondly or saw discussed positively. If I left out anything that you’d recommend, feel free to comment!
Honorable Mention
Private Party & #Stronghearts vs. Cody, Dustin Rhodes, & Young Bucks w/ Brandi Rhodes and MJF
Episode 3
https://youtu.be/IHFghxZMi5I?t=2329
Obligatory inclusion for being the only AEW Dark appearances for Cody and MJF. Dustin did a cool spot where he stopped to catch his breath during a sequence of powerslams, which he repeated on a subsequent Dynamite.
Shoko Nakajima vs. Riho
Episode 19
https://youtu.be/LuHw1MLmLVI?t=71
Shoko Nakajima, the 147cm kaiju, pinned Riho in a tag team match at Fight for the Fallen in July (the one where Britt Baker got concussed). This is her first AEW match since then, and it was very fun and smooth. Both workers do incredible northern lights suplexes.
Kip Sabian w/ Penelope Ford vs. Kenny Omega
Episode 10
https://youtu.be/gEJLIO7zQ_E?t=3412
This match wasn’t really on my radar until I saw it had a favorable rating on Cagematch.net. Chuck Taylor is fun on commentary. It’d rank higher if not for the similarities to Kenny’s match with Jack Evans, which happened two weeks prior, and the other Kip/Penelope matches on my list.
Bea Priestley vs. Kris Statlander
Episode 11
https://youtu.be/-uT8-duLOCM?t=1902
Another match that wasn’t on my radar if not for Cagematch.net. Joey Janela and Vickie Guerrero joined Excalibur on commentary. These two women could be the future of the division, so I think much of the love was for that fact and Kris Statlander’s arrival in general. Innovative offense and counters, though sloppy in parts. Kris cuts a punny promo afterwards.
Shawn Spears vs. Joey Janela
Episode 12
https://youtu.be/gNMhwbMhlbA?t=2346
Just a fun match, though it was also a blow-off to a feud lasting about 8 weeks off-and-on, including a match at Full Gear. Colt Cabana was on commentary. Since this was the last episode of Dark before the Christmas break, there were some cameos by Santa Claus and Jesus.

#10 – The Hybrid2 & PAC vs. Best Friends & Orange Cassidy
Six-Man Tag Team Match
Episode 11
https://youtu.be/-uT8-duLOCM?t=2762
Part of my enjoyment for this match comes from Vickie Guerrero and Joey Janela clearly having fun on commentary. This match gave us “the hottest tag of this generation” as Orange Cassidy tried for the first time in AEW. His reversal of PAC’s pump kick was a call-back to their encounter on a Nov. 6 episode of Dynamite. Orange Cassidy wouldn’t try this hard in AEW until Revolution on Feb. 29 when he faced PAC once again.

#9 – Jurassic Express vs. Santana & Ortiz
Tag Team Match
Episode 9
https://youtu.be/EGMw6YGfSrs?t=2358
Despite not winning many matches in 2019, Jurassic Express was popular with the AEW fans, and this match was, in my opinion, the pivotal moment in the crowd accepting Marko Stunt (along with his gutsy performance against the Lucha Bros. on Dynamite). This was a sentimental pick for me as I was there live, and I said aloud about Santana & Ortiz, “it’s hard to boo them, they’re so good!” They are very entertaining heels, as evidenced by their stalling tag-out vertical suplex, which they did in AEW for (I believe) only the first or second time in this match. Nyla Rose did a decent job on commentary, having fun calling the action in-character. Returning after a few week injury hiatus, Luchasaurus got a tremendous crowd reaction, and the assisted Canadian destroyer was one of the spots of the year on Dark.

#8 – Darby Allin vs. Cima
Episode 1
https://youtu.be/qaTJDgOPS2I?t=83
In the debut episode of AEW Dark, in the first match (I believe this was performed prior to the debut episode of Dynamite), an eager crowd was treated to a rising star fan-favorite clashing with a competitor much his senior. Despite the age difference, both men competed with speed and intensity. High spots include Cima’s meteora to the back of a seated Darby’s neck and the first successful Coffin Drop after Darby had missed the first several AEW attempts in spectacular fashion (including the rib-cracking apron slam at Fyter Fest and the Cracker Barrel Clash missed attempt at All Out).

#7 – Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford vs. Kenny Omega & Riho
Intergender Tag Team Match
Episode 18
https://youtu.be/-eoBkr7HvEI?t=1877
When AEW began, Tony Kahn said he would not want to include any intergender matches, citing a Jordynne Grace injury at All In. Kenny, a proponent of equality with the female competitors, had rallied to include an intergender match so he could tag with Riho, whom he teamed with in Japan. Taking place at the Rock ‘n Wrestling Rager at Sea, this match had no commentary and a single, continuous camera shot (save two weird cuts). Kenny and Riho had adorable matching gear. The lack of commentary meant that the viewer could hear everything in ring, so it was impressive that there was no obvious spot-calling chatter, and there were some funny moments like hearing Kip saying "I want to wrestle" when he asks for tag, which you may not catch in a normal production. An overall fun match with great chemistry for all, those who prefer cleaner presentation may find the camerawork off-putting, and the match itself was similar to Kenny Omega vs. Kip Sabian on episode 10 of AEW Dark.

#6 – Pentagon Jr. vs. Trent?
Episode 8
https://youtu.be/skqYWeADuds?t=85
Shawn Spears joined the commentary booth for this episode in Indianapolis, and I am not sure if this was filmed before or after Dynamite, but the crowd was exceptionally hot. Though both participants are known for tag teams in AEW, neither had his partner at ringside, leaving the men to show their skills in a typical hard-hitting match that you’d expect with them. I don’t recall there being a rivalry at the time, but this certainly sets up the ongoing feud between Best Friends and Death Triangle. Several high-spots include a package piledriver onto the ring apron and slingshot Canadian destroyer.

#5 – Kip Sabian w/ Penelope Ford vs. Joey Janela
Falls Count Anywhere Match
Episode 21
https://youtu.be/2hBK0YIfq8I?t=1618
When asked over Twitter if he’d want to feud with Kip Sabian over his ex-girlfriend Penelope Ford, Joey Janela said he’d rather go back to delivering pizzas. While Kip and Joey promos suggested a professional feud, the commentary and fans assumed this was personal. Unsurprisingly, Penelope Ford intervened in the match – obvious both from the “love triangle” aspect and the fact that she and Kip always intervene in each other’s matches. They’re good heels! And in speaking of Penelope Ford, she is the reason I like this match so much. AEW Dark can be a showcase for those who can’t get regular TV time, and Penelope has shown great promise despite being “green.” Her cross-body off of the stage required full commitment, winning me over. Also requiring commitment was the finish, a high-velocity swing of a Singapore cane right to Kip Sabian’s head/neck.

#4 – Jack Evans vs. Kenny Omega (c.)
AAA Mega Championship Match
Episode 8
https://youtu.be/skqYWeADuds?t=3142
As with entry #6, Shawn Spears joined Excalibur on commentary. This was the first and, so far, only championship match in AEW Dark history, and Kenny Omega’s first championship defense since defeating Rey Fénix at Héroes Inmortales XIII. There were very innovative maneuvers and counters from both men (Evans’s counter of a Kotaro Crusher via breakdance moves was especially entertaining). Evans is talented but normally seen in multi-man matches where his efforts may go unnoticed, so this was a good solo performance for him; Omega, on the other hand, always has good matches, and has also been on Dark more than his main-event-level peers. Like other Kenny Omega matches, he “played all the hits.” My inclusion for this match at #4 is mostly due to the championship aspect because the match itself was fairly lopsided. Though spectacular at points, I would much prefer entry #6 from the same show if neither had a championship. Something about world-traveler Jack Evans would make him a great AAA Mega Champion, and the very facet of a AAA championship appearing on AEW TV is intriguing to me.

#3 – The Hybrid2 vs. Private Party vs. Best Friends vs. Santana & Ortiz
Four-Way Tag Team Match
Episode 12
https://youtu.be/gNMhwbMhlbA?t=764
In speaking of showcase matches, AEW believes it has the strongest tag team division in professional wrestling. This match is a showcase of four amazing tag teams, each with their own strengths, gimmicks, and desire to perform. Sometimes when you have a wealth of talent or want to ratchet up the energy, you’ll book a multi-man match. I recall two such four-way tag team matches at WrestleMania 35, for instance. With so many talented performers, given the time and space to show off their abilities and tell their stories, you’re bound to have a very entertaining albeit chaotic match. Especially enjoyable about this match were the comedy aspects: Colt Cabana on commentary, a mid-match cameo by Orange Cassidy, and antics by light-hearted performers such as Ortiz, Chuck Taylor, and Isaiah Kassidy. I was also impressed by the logic and restraint in match-planning, because it can be difficult to logically plan a match of this type – how do you involve all four teams when only two are in the ring at a time? If you can look past the chaos (which often happens midway through these types of matches) and keep track of all of the moving pieces, this is a very enjoyable match that highlights some great up-and-coming AEW tag team talent.

#2 – Jimmy Havoc vs. Jack Evans vs. Darby Allin
Falls Count Anywhere Match
Episode 4
https://youtu.be/tqdImouRtvo?t=2571
In the beginning, there were no weapons. There were no multi-man matches. Everything took place in the squared circle, one-on-one, with tight and strictly-enforced rules.
Then, performers and promoters started to add variables.
Variables allow for matches to look and feel different. For example, a tag team match: with four competitors, you can plan a completely different match, using completely different spots, than a singles match. If you add a chair or a table, again. If you allow pinfalls to occur on the ramp, again.
Wrestling is so ridiculous by nature that it can be anything and everything. This match achieves that by adding variables (another competitor, weapons, falls counting anywhere). And it’s not just for service of bloodlust. One of the biggest reactions in the match came from Jack Evans berating referee Aubrey Edwards! But yeah… the dangerous high-spots were there, too. From Jack Evans’s 450 splash onto a prone Jimmy Havoc across two chairs to Jimmy Havoc’s piledriver to Jack Evans through a table to Darby Allin’s chair-assisted Coffin Drop, this match was the id-pacifying extravaganza you’d hope from such daft competitors.

#1 – Joey Janela vs. Kenny Omega
Lights Out Match
Episode 2
https://youtu.be/I7_nxdftYks?t=2256
In speaking of which…
This match had all of the story-telling and bloodlust you’d hope to see in your wrestling, but done for free on YouTube with no wins or losses being ascribed in the record books. What is recorded, though, are some figures:
· At 8.29, this is the highest-rated AEW Dark match on Cagematch.net
· It received 4.25 stars in WON
· At 1.2 million views, it is the most-watched episode of AEW Dark
After losing to Chris Jericho and PAC, Kenny Omega was a man on a descent into madness; Jon Moxley’s assault through a glass coffee table on the opening episode of Dynamite didn’t help matters, either. Kenny was advised to sit out of action in AEW’s second week of TV, but he scheduled himself in an unsanctioned match instead. This match followed Moxley vs. Janela in a lights out match at Fyter Fest and preceded Moxley vs. Omega in a lights out match at Full Gear, making Janela in some way the bridge that brought those two together. Watch carefully as Kenny Omega performs some of Jon Moxley’s moves midway through the match to advance their story. High-spots include throws onto ladders, off of the ring steps, onto the apron, and onto a table hardware-side-up! The finish, a One-winged Angel onto an upright chair, was one of the most brutal wrestling spots I’ve ever seen. All this for no ad revenue (this episode was not monetized) and no tallies in the win-loss records.
[Starts “this is wrestling” chant.]

2020.03.22 17:58 Maus-Ratte First time builder

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Mainly playing games such as War Thunder, World of Warships, and probably an FPS later on.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
My parents (don’t bully) are letting my come up with a list of PC parts to see the budget. I would think a max of $550 but there is a slight chance it can be extended
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
My parents say that they will have to discuss it, and see the economic situation during/after COVID-19. I would say I’m not too terribly worried about it being outdated in the future.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
The entirety of the tower and the OS. I have a monitor ready to buy, and a keyboard and mouse on hand.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
United States, north of Indianapolis (Indiana). I do not have access to a mircocenter location.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
The monitor I plan on buying is a ASUS VP248QGL. I plan on upgrading to a Havit mechanical keyboard and mouse combo
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
To be honest, I don’t know what that is (PS4 user) but I might try it out a bit after I build the PC.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
I would really like an SSD with around 1TB. LEDs are nice, but the last thing to be considered.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
I need WiFi. As long as it doesn’t take too long, I’m fine with any speed.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No size preferences unless it’s like 40lbs. LEDs are nice, but like mentioned above, are the last thing to be considered.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I need a copy, but I don’t really care as long as the budget isn’t destroyed, I’m good.

2020.02.14 14:18 DJRungeKutta Help with $1500 USD PC build for numerical analysis (no gaming required).

I plan on buying this PC within one-two weeks from today (e.g. by the end of February).
N/A

EDIT (02/28): Hi all, I want to thank everybody for their suggestions! It took me a while to get the funds approved from work (my workplace didn't have Newegg as an "approved vendor" so had to get authorization from just below the CIO to trade with them) but decided to go with build with 64gb of RAM by Jonnesus. I have a feeling my colleagues will be jealous of this build (and many of the other builds that were suggested) and have no doubt they will want something similar. Most of my colleagues spend any available money they have upgrading their screens rather than the actual tower. Appreciate all the time you all spent providing me with advice!

2020.01.17 19:24 Admiral_Red Stand Alone Complex (III)

To the casual observer, the sight before them might have seemed fantastical, breathtaking, even heart-stopping.
One might not blame them, considering the almost literal rain of explosive shells and kinetic slugs that had erupted from the Azur Lane fleet. But on a tactical level, such a raw display of humanity’s might was reduced to simple math.
Barriers, both those produced by regular human technology and the Sirens, shared the same operating principle; though invaluable in stopping potentially lethal damage, they could only withstand so much punishment before collapsing. Thus, attritional fire tended to be the order of choice.
Or in this case, the largest KANSEN barrage in history.
The first few dozen combined impacts and detonations were absorbed by Siren barriers, energy fields soon straining, then losing cohesion, and finally failing. The rest got through, ruthlessly finding their marks amongst Sirens and mass production craft alike. But they were nothing if not resilient.
The Sirens had fired their own barrage in return, of course. Though since they lacked battleships of their own, such weaker fire was absorbed with less strain for Serina’s fleet.
Warmind Alcaeus took in damage reports. Illustrious, Portland, Indianapolis and, to a smaller extent, Zara had assisted in generating fleet-wide barriers and shoring up armor integrity. Local damage was light while the majority of Siren forces had suffered at least moderate damage, some sustaining very heavy damage or having been sunk by the initial barrages. The Strategists and the mass production carriers had certainly survived, though the capital-class Sirens bled ichor from multiple wounds. Enemy air cover was, unfortunately, still closing in fast.
And even for KANSEN, fighting off AKVs was nasty business.
[Siren fleet is beginning repair cycle. Adjust formation, anti-air. AKVs intercepting. Fighters, assist. San Diego, front and center. All AA vessels, focus fire on hostile aircraft.]

Amongst the fleet, San Diego giggled as she sailed to a central position. Targeting data was fed in and crunched, her modified rigging shifting as components and emitters emerged.
Ordinarily, most rigging AA guns were mass drivers, designed for pure rate of fire and efficient use of energy reserves. And admittedly, they were brutally effective. But San Diego, having seen the armaments of the modern 23rd century and wanting something far better, had sought her Commander’s assistance personally. And today...she would show those Siren scum the fruit of their combined efforts.
[Hehe...ehehehe...girls, eyes up and guns out! I know it, you know it, the world will know it!]
67 initial targets acquired and locked. LPDS(X) online. Increase in power required. Compensating. Power draw redirected from auxiliary supply. Operating time - 00:10:00. Charging emitters. Heat radiators on standby.
“I am Number One!”
The night sky practically became a disco party as San Diego blazed away...not with rapid-fire mass drivers, but with burst after burst of pulsed lasers. Even through the Warmind uplink and combat-mandated emotional suppression, nearby, Cleveland gaped at the sight of a joyfully cackling San Diego, the air around her rigging’s newly deployed thermal radiators shimmering with tremendous amounts of waste heat, before frantically shaking her head, surprise and shock fading under the battle trance and joining in with the chattering buzz of her own AA fire.
Nearby, Belfast calmly directed her own AA grid, rivers of mass driver rounds zipping out to perfectly shred their targets. The Head Maid maneuvered with her usual elegance, keeping maximum forward coverage alongside the other light cruisers. Occasionally, a volley or two would be fired from her guns, finding their mark on a Chaser or Explorer and setting them ablaze.
The seas were showered with debris as Siren aircraft and drones were blown out of the sky by lasers and mass drivers alike. But there were many more of them, and soon, the fighters of both sides met. It seemed the AKVs were deciding to take their battle elsewhere, both sides rapidly climbing to higher altitudes.
It was a curious sight, to be sure, seeing the seemingly antiquated forms of KANSEN aircraft start to take on the far more modern designs of Siren fighters. Yet they were undoubtedly able to hold their own, even while evading AA fire from the plasma AA guns of Siren vessels. Through the weave of Warmind Alcaeus, Shoukaku, Zuikaku, Graf Zeppelin, Illustrious, Victorious, Enterprise and every other carrier coordinated their fighter swarms to swat out as many fighters as they could, directing other assets to striking at the Siren fleet.
Explosions lit up the darkness as KANSEN dive bombers and torpedo bombers released their payloads, further damaging their enemies.

High above even that frantic fighter engagement, 16 war machines levelled out and darted towards their Siren counterparts.
Designed and deployed in the closing years of the Great War, human Autonomous Kill Vehicles had emerged as their answer to Siren equivalents that had, until then, blown virtually all other types of human fighters and drones out of the sky.
The heavy weaponry and resilience of an anti-capital assault gunship, married to the supreme speed and maneuverability of an aerospace superiority interceptor. Even in training exercises, pilots of all nations now dreaded hearing those three letters across comms.
With machine efficiency, the 16 AKVs analyzed the sensor returns of their opposition. 15 Banshee-type AKVs. Resembling the heads of squid, this variant had been one of the most fearsome pilot-killers of the Great War. A worthy opponent.
Along the sleek spearhead-like bodies of the AKVs, small panels retracted, small wings unfolding from internal compartments as their ‘feathers’ began glowing, first a dull red, then orange, and finally a shimmering white-hot. These were in fact not actually wings, but highly effective heat radiators, elegantly biomimetic in their physical design.
All weapons armed. Shields charged. Heat radiators in combat position. Reaper Flight ready to engage. Stormrider Flight ready to engage. Falcon Flight ready to engage. Saber Flight ready to engage.
The Lockheed-Martin A-91s were technically classed as being part of the eighth generation of Autonomous Kill Vehicles. From the beginning, their design goal, primary directive and sim performance history was simple.
There had been enemies like the Banshees in every generation.
They’d killed every last one of them.
Targets confirmed and locked. Fox 3. Missiles away.
Pushing themselves up to a full combat burn, the AKVs screamed across the dark as they launched missiles, their fusion drives creating visible, lengthy trails of bright blue in the night sky.
The Siren AKVs did the same, slashing ahead with the strange signature ‘singing’ of their superior antimatter-catalyzed fusion drives.
Lasers and particle beams flashed back and forth from both human and Siren craft as they dived, rolled and pirouetted about with impossible grace and agility, eliminating pursuing missiles with contemptuous ease.
They circled back, assessing their situations and respective capabilities. The 16 human AKVs took in their decreased missile stores, all shot down by Siren particle beams. Their own laser cores had also eliminated every Siren missile just as easily. Missiles were concluded to be of limited effectiveness while opposing point defense was still active. It was down to dogfighting and cyberwarfare to assure victory. Against Siren craft, that was somewhat riskier.
In short, whichever side won, it would probably be a close one.
The AKVs completed their assessment and coldly accepted their odds. Their AI cores dialed up power to the autocannon turrets and center-mounted Anti-Armor Rail Cannons. Laser cores adjusted for faster, more numerous pulses.
Autocannons armed. Lasers recalibrated for rapid output. Prioritize point defense capability for hostile missile depletion. Setting AARCs to 2-round burst.
They darted forward once again, and the Autonomous Kill Vehicles began to duel.

The tide of battle was gradually turning in favor of the Azur Lane. In the invisible expanse of cyberspace, the Siren fleet’s Warmind met the full fury of TITAN/EXCALIBUR. Already having to deal with Warmind Alcaeus’ own assault and the physical damage dealt to their platforms, the Siren network was forced to split its efforts to combating both at once. To their credit, they still managed to hold both off for quite some time.
Hardly limited by the relatively slow crawl of organic time, the Sword of Humanity was unwavering in its digital assault. Countless hacks and counter-hacks played out in microseconds, and steadily but surely the Siren Warmind found itself faltering under TITAN/EXCALIBUR’s offensive, one bolstered by the surprising effectiveness of Warmind Alcaeus’ cyberwar.
Then, unexpectedly, specific nodes collapsed with surgical precision. Confusion and surprise, or at least something vaguely like it, rippled across the Siren Warmind as those connections were violently severed.
Flailing with disorientation, the Siren Warmind held out as best it could. But even they knew they were now running on borrowed time. Without hesitation, primary defensive protocols withdrew to the command platforms and reinforced them, the two mass production carriers and Strategists, sacrificing the rest of the fleet’s cyberdefenses, and consequently their safety. Four carrier units wasn’t much against a fleet of many more opposing carriers and battleships.
But it would buy enough time to ensure the Sirens could transmit their combat data.

In the physical world, a battered Oceana-class Siren found herself freezing up, unable to fire or move beyond tiny movements.
Sensing an opening, Roon fired a full volley at it. Unable to call upon allied shields or evade much, the Siren heavy cruiser was ended by another volley, a mix of explosive shells and APFSDS rounds obliterating her and most of her rigging from the waist up.
The Ironblood Prototype KANSEN grinned ferally as she locked on to another target, firing and killing an Explorer, as well as a mass production destroyer behind them. “Keep coming! Keep coming! I want to hear your dying screams, you alien bitches!”
Behind her, the shipgirl fleet was already beginning to mop up the rest of the now-disoriented Sirens. With that many battleship KANSENs deployed, it would practically be a cakewalk.

A distance away, within the Fortress, a still-cloaked Tirpitz waited, keeping her eyes locked on the rampaging Roon. Thus far, the rogue KANSEN had only taken the occasional potshot at Serina’s fleet, choosing instead to take on the Sirens.
Certainly not their ally, but at the moment, not their enemy. The question was what to do when the Siren fleet inevitably fell and Roon’s attention returned to them.
An idea arose to the surface of her mind, and Tirpitz blinked. [Commander. I might have a plan to neutralize Roon and her rigging quickly. I’ll need Amagi’s help and I also need to contact that person she brought in.]
[I’m listening. Uplinking you to Warmind and opening voice-only virch connection.]
Feeling herself grow beyond her Shell alone, Tirpitz held on to herself enough to maintain standard interactions. [Herr Kajiwara, this is operative Spirit of Naval Base Alcaeus. You noted down in your data that Roon and her rigging are semi-autonomous from each other, yet linked. What happens if either of them goes down?]
On the other end, the scientist’s answer was confused yet contemplative. [Spirit? Wh…? Well...um...we never managed that in her combat sims, since she killed her opponents so quickly, but...it’s very likely the feedback might make the other freeze for a bit. Though if Roon went down...you might face a very angry rigging.]
[Not exactly my intention, that one, but thanks for the assistance. Spirit, out.] Tirpitz replied, before closing the virch connection and addressing Serina. [Commander, is that main gun you made for Warspite available? The one she killed Purifier with.]
It seemed Serina had caught on to her plan very quickly, because the hypermind answered immediately. [It was secured in the Workshop for additional modding, but I’ll set it up for transport. Changing ammo profile to maximize kinetic impact. Ping Amagi, I’ll reconfigure the software for you.]
Tirpitz did so across the Warmind congruence, a full communication of ideas and plans occurring across milliseconds. Vaguely, she felt the presence of Victorious in the Warmind, and many emotions struggled to rise past the combat suppression.
Steeling herself, Tirpitz dialed down the threshold a little more, the rush of love and other emotions dying back down to cold focus. Despite how deep her feelings were for the armored carrier, now was not the time for romantics.
The fiery orange sparks of a forming portal by Amagi caught her eyes, and the imposing form of Warspite’s railgun revealed itself as transport drones brought it through the portal and deposited it onto the floor before her.
Tirpitz took it up easily, its systems linking and melding with her own as its smart matter surface shimmered and disappeared under the spreading influence of her thermoptic camouflage. A map of the Fortress appeared in her ARO to the nearest available firing position, and without delay the Ironblood battleship hurried off.

As the battle raged on in the sea beneath them, the human AKVs noticed a change in their opponents’ patterns. By now, 7 of their number had been lost, either being destroyed by particle lances or by suicide collisions. The Siren AKVs had also suffered, 6 of their number destroyed.
Flight paths were wavering and off by a few degrees, hostile attack vectors missed sufficiently to be of little concern and missile stocks (on both sides) had long since been depleted and/or neutralized by point defenses.
True, they’d been running their own cyberwar efforts against the Siren AKV flights. But disregarding active Warmind uplinks, by themselves both were nearly evenly matched in that field too. Unless some level of disruption in the Siren Warmind had also briefly disrupted their coordination and effectiveness.
A high priority ping registered on the A-91s’ sensors. Every remaining Banshee’s shields had suddenly failed.
An opening. Time to press the attack. It was now or never.
As one, all remaining 9 craft shot ahead with a single, short burst of drive power and flipped with inhuman agility. They maintained alignment on their targets for only milliseconds...long enough for Reaper-03 and Stormrider-01 to blow two Banshees out of the sky with two-round AARC bursts.
Whirling about to orbit each other and pursue a shared target, Saber-02 and Saber-04 shredded another Siren AKV with sustained fire, the alien craft disintegrating from turreted autocannon and pulse laser barrages that tore through its armor and airframe even as it attempted to evade. Another Banshee rammed itself into Falcon-01, both AKVs detonating in fireballs.
Now outnumbered, the Siren AKVs did their best to take as many of their opponents with them as possible. Already relatively sluggish from the disruption to their systems, 3 Banshees failed to evade sufficiently, and were blown to shrapnel with AARC hits. The final two did not go gently, one eliminating Saber-02 with a particle lance right as it was also blasted apart by its opponent’s twin AARC impacts, and the last Banshee taking out Reaper-03 with a suicide ramming.
As debris rained down into the sea, six AKVs remained airborne, diving down to assist their allied forces.
Humanity’s engineering had won - this time.

By one of the massive platforms where an anti-ship railgun battery normally would have been installed on the Heavenly Fortress, Tirpitz waited, lying prone.
Through the scope of Warspite’s borrowed railgun, her crosshair waited over her target.
She wasn’t that much of a sniper, or at least not when compared to the legendary skills of Warspite. But she certainly knew how to eliminate a priority target.
Target acquired and locked. Acceleration rails on standby for 200% charge. ALERT: executing fire mission will temporarily compromise thermoptic camouflage. High probability of Shell damage through increased recoil.
Tirpitz exhaled as she settled the crosshair dead center. Her job now was simple. This was it.
Don’t. Miss.
Fire mission authorized.

Four combined barrages from Amagi, Monarch, Washington and Mutsu punched into a Siren mass production carrier, the massive capital ship soon breaking up and sinking violently, becoming a crumbling mass of burning alloys and polymers.
With clinical focus, Monarch eyed the other mass production carrier as its shields finally collapsed from a full barrage by both Belfast and Edinburgh.
Weak points were marked, and despite the combat suppression, Monarch’s lips curled in a small smile. Tempting, but no. Besides, both Roon and Graf Zeppelin had already opened fire.
Twin particle lances cored the mass production carrier right as 12 AARC rounds from the screaming AKVs, descending from the night sky like avenging angels, slammed into it, secondary detonations tearing the vessel apart like its sister ship.
As the 6 killer craft sharply pulled up to ruthlessly eliminate the last few Siren fighters and straggling ships with maximum efficiency, it was down to the Strategists now. Roon had already charged ahead at them, absorbing their weak attempts at defensive fire. She separated from her rigging with meters to spare, the mechanical beast going on to bite one Strategist in half while Roon herself grappled with the alien cyborg, soon ripping the other’s head off in a gory spray of ichor.
Silence from every shipgirl soon fell across the battlefield as Roon breathed heavily, giggling as she felt the warmth of Siren blood staining her uniform and skin. The echoing screams of AKV drives went ignored.
“Hehe...hehehe...now, then...where were we?” she asked in a far too cheery voice as she slowly turned back to the shipgirl fleet with a smile, crushing the last Strategist’s head into a messy cybernetic pulp in her hand and tossing it aside.
A brilliant flare of plasma and a colossal thunderclap of sound from the Fortress was her answer, as the upper half of Roon’s rigging simply vaporized in a split-second nova of high-hypersonic impact, the remnants toppling and capsizing unceremoniously.
She froze in shock and horror as the explosion washed over her, feeling a part of her truly die.
It would be her last mistake.
The heavy cruiser tried to move, only able to let out a silent scream of effort as her body somehow refused to obey her. No matter how much she struggled, the most Roon could do was look around as she fell backwards onto the ocean surface.
What’s happening? Why can’t I move?! Someone...anyone! Please...please!
Her visual feeds were overwhelmed by sudden error messages and constant flickering, and the last thing Roon saw before everything cut out to total darkness was a stark warning alert of total systems breach.

Ice-blue eyes beheld their distant, collapsed target floating upon the ocean’s surface, surrounded by Siren wreckage and cybernetic viscera.
Along the weapon’s barrel, the railgun’s heat vents were working on overdrive, attempting to cool down the weapon as best they could from the overcharged shot.
[Commander...please tell me...you got her.]
[Ghosthack complete. Roon has entered full Shell immobilization. Amagi will assist in sending over a stasis pod and getting you back to base, stat. We’ll send you to the medical bay immediately.]
Tirpitz breathed heavily, gritting her teeth through the burning pain in her very much dislocated shoulder. [...Affirmative.]
Much as the Queen of the North had confidence in her own skills, if her battle against the Siren fleet had been anything to go by, Roon would not have made an easy opponent in a naval brawl.
The recoil of that overcharged shot had been excruciating, as the current state of her shoulder would attest. But as some people had said before…
“Worth it.”

2 hours after everyone’s return to Naval Base Alcaeus, Tirpitz winced as Victorious gingerly took ahold of her arm, the battleship’s shoulder having been popped back into place thanks to Vestal’s efforts.
Tirpitz said nothing, knowing the mix of (fading) anger, worry and relief that most likely still swirled behind the armored carrier’s soft gaze and equally soft voice.
“Vestal gave you a week’s light duty. Rest up, okay?”
Tirpitz remained silent, meeting the other’s gaze with guilt-ridden eyes. Victorious closed her eyes and exhaled as she gently embraced the battleship.
Gently, Tirpitz took Victorious’ hand and tenderly squeezed it. “I’m sorry...for always making you worry.”
“Don’t scare me like that again...okay?” came the blonde’s whisper. Tirpitz rested her head against her lover’s, a simple gesture that she knew Victorious appreciated.
Liebchen...I can’t make you a promise I might not be able to keep.”
As Victorious silently and sadly nodded, Tirpitz exhaled, reaching out through the ether while she did her best to reciprocate the blonde’s loving embrace. [Commander?]
Serina’s NeuroComm reply was soft, knowing the battleship was having a tender moment. [Always here, Tirpitz.]
[How is our...guest?]
[Secured in the Bunker. Orders from HighCom are to keep her safe and ease her through therapy. Psychosurgery only if and when deemed necessary. The Azur Lane also sent a detachment over to secure the Fortress.]
[That’s...good.]
[Rest, Tirpitz. You did good. All of you did. Oh, also...Warspite wished for me to pass on a message. She’d have sent it herself, but...she’s busy working on her gun.]
[Go on.]
What followed was transmitted in Warspite’s ‘voice’. [“Congratulations on a truly superb kill shot. I could not have done it better myself. But please...no overcharging next time.”]
Tirpitz chuckled slightly at that. Victorious made a little noise of curiosity, and the battleship kissed her gently. “Just idle thoughts, liebchen. Idle thoughts.”
The silence that followed was warm and comfortable.

She awoke to gentle warmth and the morning light.
Roon blinked away the mental fog of unconsciousness, inhaling deeply as she got up in what seemed to be a comfortable bed inside a neat and tidy room. At least her dress was intact. A look out the nearby window showed...a verdant field near a forest?
A megacity much further away, sprinkled with little sparkles from distant starscrapers, glittered in the light of the morning sun.
A little readout on her ARO helpfully supplied her with its identity. [Stuttgart]
The heavy cruiser thought hard in confusion, realizing after a while her DNI had slowly been rebooting. Her heart fell as she tried reaching out, feeling only a void where a familiar presence had once been.
Her rigging was truly gone.
The shipgirl’s rising grief was interrupted by confusion when a gentle chime came from the room’s door. She narrowed her eyes. “Come...in?”
The door slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a kind-looking young woman with short, auburn hair she did not recognize. “Mm! Guten morgen, sleepyhead!”
Guten...morgen…” Roon replied hesitantly. “Who are you? How am I here in the Fatherland?”
The young woman smiled. “I am Ruhe Baumann. As for how you got here...a nice lady with short, white hair dropped you off here a few days ago. Asked me to take care of you in her stead. I couldn’t say no to someone in need, could I?”
Roon tilted her head, even more confused. A woman with short white hair? She hadn’t recalled anyone like that back in the Fortress. Maybe this person had found her in the ocean?
The heavy cruiser blinked as Ruhe offered her a hand to shake. Slowly, she took it, noting how slim it was. The brunette smiled. “Relax, you’ll be alright. I never did get your name.”
The shipgirl hesitated, but decided against lying. It didn’t seem like Ruhe knew what she truly was. “I’m...I’m Roon.”
Ruhe’s smile grew slightly. “It’s nice to meet you, Roon. Let us get along well, ja?”
Despite herself, Roon felt herself relax. If she couldn’t fight...perhaps she could lay low for a while. A part of her twisted in disappointment at that, but for now rationality won out.
If nothing else...she’d always wanted to see some bits of nature.

“Psychstab status?”
“Holding steady, no approach to critical Threshold. Psychometrics largely stable during awakening. Maintaining virch synch with data influx.”
Mira Vouhn nodded, her eyes flickering across the rapidly scrolling data feeds of her holovisor as she delivered quick, efficient orders to her subordinate. “Good. Report any and all negative-trend deviations to me immediately by NeuroComm.”
“Yes, Doctor.”
Serina materialized, her avatar folding her arms. “She’ll at least be stable, Doctor, but I’ll do my best to help Roon improve.”
Vouhn cast a doubtful glance at the ASI. “It’s quite the gambit you’re undertaking, Kommandant. You will forgive me, I hope, if I have my doubts about the possibility of success?”
Serina nodded. “I can’t blame you for being skeptical, and honestly I will need that skepticism throughout this. How is your acquaintance doing?”
The former IISI Director let out an amused snort, knowing very well that Serina was merely asking that out of social courtesy. “Still gobsmacked that you could reengineer such an improved version of his Shell and forge a perfect cover profile for him.”
The scientist in question emerged from a sliding door at that moment, clad in a new lab skinsuit and uniform. Amagi followed just behind him. “This is...quite the facility you have here, Vouhn-sensei. Blows even the Sakura Empire facilities I was at before out of the water.”
Serina smiled as Amagi politely tittered. “You’ll find that I place a particular priority on R&D here, Doctor. Are you adjusting well?”
Kajiwara exhaled. “Well...I’ll have to lay low anyway even with that cover you spun up. I’m not dead, at least. But if I can help the Azur Lane’s efforts...then you have my gratitude, Shikikan.”
He received a nod from the ASI, as she sighed. “Let’s do our best, people. For her sake.”
Amagi glanced at one of the holoscreens, where Roon rested within a stasis pod at the Bunker’s core, linked up to a virch.
Just like her own sister was. Part of the tactician’s heart pained for the young soul within.
“For her sake.”

The stasis pod looked quite inviting, and Monarch gazed for a long time at it as she prepared the stasis sequence and training virch uplink with thought and interface alone.
“You don’t have to go back under, you know.”
The Priority battleship half-turned, Serina flashing into existence beside her. Monarch gave a slight shake of her head.
“It is my choice, Commander. I was to be awakened in times of crisis, was I not? Now that it has passed, for the moment...it would be wasteful if I remained. It is not as if virtual interaction is any less meaningful, after all.” came her steel-willed yet politely toned reply.
Serina closed her eyes briefly and nodded, seeing that Monarch had already committed to it. If such was her wish, she could only respect the decisions of her strongest combat asset. “...Very well.”
Without further words, Monarch quietly entered the pod, lying down comfortably. As the curved internal diamondoid window sealed her within, she gave one final glance at her superior.
The one who had given her purpose, the one who had entrusted her with humanity’s future. For her...Monarch would do anything.
She flashed one last NeuroComm to Serina across the ether, before the armored hatch slid itself shut over her view and she returned to a lucid second dream.
[Wake me...when you need me.]

2020.01.13 15:00 MidLevelExceptional My 2020 Colts Mock Off-season 1.0

Like in previous years my first mock is a bit more aggressive than my final one would be. This is more along the lines of what I would do, rather than what I expect Ballard to do, but I still try to take into account Ballard's statements about what he wants in his roster, what schemes he prefers, what players he thinks are important for his team, etc.
I'm using Overthecap's Colts page for salary numbers. I'm using this article for Colts' own free agents.
I will be using spotrac's free agency tracker to find other teams' free agents and if there is market value figure listed, I will try to be close to it, unless I deem it unreasonable for one reason or another.
For the draft I will be using The Draft Network's mock draft machine. I will run it with their predictive board, but I will try to take players based on how I feel about the players without trying to cheat the system(for example if a player I have ranked no. 8 is there on the board at 13 and is BPA, but is ranked 44 on their board I will NOT pass on him because I know I can draft him in later rounds, I would consider this cheating the system because I have information that in the real world GMs don't really have).
Starting Team Cap Space: $91,846,470
Own Free Agents:
Unrestricted FAs
Josh Andrews OC 1 year 2M, reliable backup, secure him as our backup C for next year
Anthony Castonzo OT 3 year 50M ... So... hear me out. I usually wouldn't want to give this long of a term deal to a player that is already talking about retiring but... I would structure this one with lower starting salary and non-guaranteed increasing money going forward. Meaning - you get the money if you want to play and you get more in the future than now. Nothing given in advance except for the 1st year - 15.5M guaranteed (year 2 - 17M, becomes guaranteed after game 1 2021, year 3 - 17.5M becomes guaranteed after game 1 of 2022) (cap hit for 2020 15.5M)
**Devin Funchess, WR 1 year 5M... Ballard left me with the impression that they are actually happy with the way Funchess handled himself in his recovery behind the scenes. Give him one more year to prove himself.
Joe Haeg OT/OG 2 years 7M (4.5M guaranteed, 3.5M cap hit for 2020) He's our most universal OLineman and has done good job filling holes throughout the whole line. Deserves to be paid
Jabaal Sheard DE - 2 years 12M (7M guaranteed, 6M caphit), solid lineman. Ballard stated he regretted not retaining some more vets to help the young guys. IMO it's possible Sheard becomes one of his learned lessons and he gives him a solid contract to stay and mentor the youth
Jonathan Williams, RB 1 year 1M
Le'Raven Clark OT
Eric Ebron, TE
Clayton Geathers S
Adam Vinatieri K
Dontrelle Inman WR
Chester Rodgers WR
Restricted FAs
Briean Boddy-Calhoun, CB Original Round Tender(2,144,000)
Marcus Johnson, WR Second Round Tender (3,278,000)
Trevon Coley DT
Exclusive Rights FAs
Daurice Fountain, WR $525,000
Rolan Milligan, S/CB $495,000
Cuts:
Bryan Hoyer (3M cap savings)
Margus Hunt(4M cap savings)
Total Spent on Own FAs: 30.298M Remaining Cap Space: $61,548,470
Other Teams' FAs:
Daryl Williams, OT - 2 year 8M(5M guaranteed, 4M guaranteed/caphit first year)- This is a tough one. Williams used to be viewed as a player on the rise but then suffered a torn MCL and broken kneecap in 2018 and missed the whole season and then had a bad year in his return in 2019. The OT options this year are not great and I wanted to get a player with some upside(he's still 28). Is he shot after the injury? Or can being one more year away from his injury see him return to his previous form? This is the bet I'm making. I want to beef up the line with players that can play in case of injuries/retirement
Javon Hargrave, DT 4 years 62M(38M guaranteed, 16M guaranteed 1st year) - this is our big time FA signing. One of the best interior pass-rushers in the league and he's young(27). He played in an uneven front and still managed to record the highest pressure rate from all interior players in the NFL last year. This is something we desperately need and something I feel like Ballard might actually splurge on. He's an explosive athlete who beats opponents with quickness and leverage thanks to low center of gravity. Ballard emphasized again in the exit interview/press-conference that the 3T is extremely important for our scheme... well... lets see what we can do with a player who IMO might be even more successful in our system than in the one he was playing thus far in PIT.
Shaq Lawson, DE 4 years 34M(20M guaranteed, 9M guaranteed year 1) a pass-rusher on the rise, just had his best season. IMO he fits the profile of a left DE that Ballard likes(stout, good against the run, technically sound with some explosive traits, but not blazing fast... a player you can move inside on passing downs) - this is the Basham, Lewis, Sheard mold. It doesn't look like Ballard succeeded with the ones he drafted so here it goes. He gets himself a player that has shown he can actually play in the league and as an ex-first rounder he has the pedigree and athleticism to take another step forward in his development.
Sean Davis, FS 1 year 2M - reclamation project/depth at safety. A safety with great athleticism and ability to hit, but very inconsistent
Hunter Henry, TE, 4 years 34M (20M guaranteed, 9M guaranteed year 1) - Frank loves himself multiple TE sets. This class of free agent TE is not bad. Ultimately I narrowed it down to Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper. I think we need a pass-catching weapon from the TE position and both of those fulfill that role. IMO both are better overall players than Ebron who we lost and will allow Frank to run some of his favorite sets with the new QB we draft(a little foreshadowing for the draft from me here :woah: )
Pharoh Cooper, WR, 1 year 2.5M - depth at receiver
Total Spent on Other Teams' FAs: $42.5M Remaining Cap Space: $18,958,470
And here comes the draft...
Draft
Round 1. Pick 13 Jordan Love, QB, Utah State - my love for Love is not a secret around here. IMO Love has the highest upside of all the QBs in this year's draft. He has high level QB traits and attributes. He already has some of the things I most value in a QB - pocket presence(one of the best in the class) and ability to make plays out of structure and on the move. He has one of the strongest arms in the draft and he has pretty much all the throws in his arsenal - he can throw bullets, he can throw with touch over defenders, he can throw the deep out, he can throw the seam, he can sidearm it to create different angle, he can throw with anticipation and timing. With that said, I expect him to need a year because his decision making needs to improve and makes some very weird mistakes with his reads + he needs to learn to run a pro offense without constantly looking to the sideline for instructions. This is as much a bet on him as a prospect as it is on Frank Reich and the rest of the coaching staff to develop him. So here we go... Indy, meet your franchise QB of the future - Jordan Love.
Round 2. Pick 34 Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame This is my TE1 in the draft and I really really like Kmet. He looks very impressive with at 6'6" 255 frame with his effortless movement and pass-catching ability. He has a chance to be high end TE in the Kelce/Kittle mold. He seems to have great hands and is versatile enough to be an asset even in the run game.
Round 2. Pick 44 Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU - impressive athlete who combines his explosiveness with crafty route running. He's a threat both as a YAC receiver on short and intermediate passes and as a deep threat. Not very physical, but he has game breaker ability. I couldn't pass on him here. Whoever starts for us at QB will have some expansive weaponry.
Round 3, pick 73 Jordan Elliot, DT, Missouri - here's an explosive gap penetrating athlete who I expect to start jumping up draft boards and mock drafts soon. Get him in our rotation and develop him next to or behind Hargrave depending on how ready he is year 1.
Round 4, pick 112 Trey Adams, OT, Washington - Here's one more shot at a potential future LT for the Colts. Our OLine coach Chris Strausser gets reunited with Adams after he coached him in Washington the previous several years. Trey Adams used to be thought of as a potential 1st round tackle but then series of injuries hampered his college career. We take a shot at trying to keep him healthy and develop him as the successor to AC
Round 5, pick 142 Thomas Graham Jr, CB, Oregon - a CB with the exact make up that Ballard likes for his corners - very physical and willing tackler, very competitive. Good in zone coverage.
Round 6, pick 173 Antonio Gibson, WRB/KR - he's an electric athlete both with speed and with shiftiness. He's taken snaps at both RB and WR this year and he is very fun to watch with ball in his hands(his averages are... 19 yards per reception and 11 yards per carry, yep... this is not an error - 19 and 11!!!!). He won't be one or the other for us, he'd be a universal weapon you can unleash both from the backfield and as a deep threat and in various gimmick plays...
Round 6, pick 190 AJ Dillon, RB, Boston College - our attempt at a powerful fast RB a la Derrick Henry. Well, maybe the discount version. He doesn't play as strong and as powerful as Henry, but he will still add a bit of a different dimension to our running game with his size.
Round 7, pick 204 Gage Cervenka, OG/OC Clemson - developmental guard/depth at the interior of our line, possible future replacement for Glowinski
---Total Spent on Draftees: ~$10M Remaining Cap Space: $8,958,470
Depth chart:
Offense:
QB: Jacoby Brissett, Jordan Love, Chad Kelly
RB: Marlon Mack, Nyheim Hines, Jordan Wilkins, Johnathan Williams, A.J. Dillon, Bruce Anderson, Darius Jackson

LG: Quenton Nelson, Jake Eldrenkamp, Gage Cervenka
OC: Ryan Kelly, Josh Andrews, Javon Patterson
RG: Mark Glowinski, Joe Haeg, Andrew Donnal
RT: Braden Smith, Daryl Williams, Travis Vornkahl
Defense:
LDE: Shaq Lawson, Jabaal Sheard, Ben Banogu, Al-Quadin Muhammad

RDE: Justin Houston, Kemoko Turay, Gerri Green
WILL: Darius Leonard, Bobby Okereke, E.J. Speed
MIKE: Anthony Walker Jr., Skai Moore
SAM: Bobby Okereke, Matthew Adams, Zaire Franklin
SS: Khari Willis, George Odum,
FS: Malik Hooker, Sean Davis, Rolan Milligan
RCB: Pierre Desir, Thomas Graham Jr, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Lafayette Pitts
LCB: Rock Ya-Sin, Marvell Tell III, Quincy Wilson, Jackson Porter
Slot: Kenny Moore II, Picasso Nelson
Special teams:
LS: Luke Rhodes
P: Rigoberto Sanchez
K: Chase McLaughlin
Final thoughts:
  • It looks like the secondary can use some more work, but I will leave it as is for now. It's just the first version, and I expect it to not be amazing.
  • I'm wondering if I'm not overkilling the TE position, but... I kind of feel like we need weapons and at some point we will have to start phasing out Doyle and feel like Kmet can be a great successor for him. Here's a question - if you had to choose either Henry or Kmet? Who would you choose? And what would you do with the respective asset(the money or the pick) you decide to spare?
  • I'm loving the look of that DLine. We are 2 deep at all positions. Ideally Grover will play few snaps(just run snaps) and we will have all 4 linemen able to disrupt the passer. This would be a great line to rotate and keep fresh.
  • With all that speed and playmaking from the pass-catchers.... I kind of cannot wait to put Love in there. :woah:
Any thoughts and critique are welcome. Cheers everybody...
(Disclaimer: I used the blueprint from my last year's mock so it's possible there are some mistakes/leftovers from it. Please don't hesitate to point out any glaring errors or things you think are overly unrealistic.)

2020.01.08 19:13 WideHold Analytics Software to Track the Health of Employee Populations

Rod Reasen and I started the Healthiest Employers awards in Indiana in 2009 with a goal of understanding what employers are doing in corporate health and to recognize leaders in corporate wellbeing. Today, the designation is conducted in over 45 U.S. cities with 10,000 participating employers, including 72% of Fortune 100 companies.
With a front-seat to employer wellbeing, Rod and I identified a common thread: Employers lacked the information to make and measure key decisions in the health of their population. In 2015, we launched Springbuk, a Health Intelligence platform. Now, 8,000 employers that represent 60 million employees later, our purpose has remained the same - to provide actionable insight into managing population health.
When Rod and I realized the gap in the marketplace, identifying an opportunity to understand an employer’s health data, we realized we had a chance to meet a need. Initially, we took this thesis back to employers in the marketplace to gauge interest, and from there, we learned that employers didn’t need more data, they needed direction.
By seeing the need through the lens of the Healthiest Employers Awards, we had the confidence to forge ahead with their idea, and build the product - Springbuk’s Health Intelligence platform. By initially taking the product to local employers in the Indianapolis area, we were able to find the validation needed to build a meaningful tool that is able to change lives.
Who is Springbuk’s target demographic?
One of the strangest things I experienced when first starting out was potential customers not wanting to pay for the beta product. When Health Intelligence was in its infancy, it was still very new. Fortunately for Rod and myself, the product has proven itself time and time again to be worth the investment.
How did you find your early employees?
As hindsight is always 20/20, I stress that the best tip for finding employees when you’re first starting out is to not undervalue the importance of having an authentic vision for the company. In the early days, people take risks to join an unproven startup. People don’t quit their day jobs to take a pay cut, work out of someone’s basement, or be uncertain by what the future holds. By finding a unified, motivating factor for employees, it allows everyone to see the end goal and the vision for what you’re trying to accomplish.
Did you run any companies prior?
I started a marketing agency in 2007 that I stayed with through 2013. In fact, this was where I met my Springbuk and Healthiest Employers co-founder, Rod Reasen.
Prior to the marketing agency, Springbuk, and Healthiest Employers, I was working for a major Fortune 100 financial services company. While this might seem like a dream role for others, I felt as though by working in such a large company I wasn’t able to see or feel the impact I was having. Often times in conference rooms and seeing a lack of speed or change or adaptability, I felt as though I must be the one doing something wrong. But rather than changing my mindset to match my job, I decided to change my job to match my mindset.
When I first started out, there was some level of apprehension from my friends who were less entrepreneurial. However, I was willing to take the risk and if it failed, I could always go back to what I was doing before. However, I didn’t look at it as taking a risk, I looked at is as making an investment in myself and my worth ethic. By the time Springbuk came around, my third venture as a founder, my support team knew I had what it would take and trusted my vision if I said it could work. However, as with many that work in health tech companies, my network still isn’t always quite sure exactly what Springbuk does.
What have you learned since starting a business?
What motivates me when things go wrong is knowing that usually means things are about to go right. In the life of an entrepreneur, each day sees high highs and low lows, often within the same hour. There’s almost the “dog year” mindset that each week is equal to seven, due to the amount of movement, adapting, and activity that can happen in a single week. However, seeing the work pay off makes it easier to not get too hung up on the lows.
My best advice for someone starting out is that you cannot spend too much time with your customers. It sounds obvious, but with rapid-fire change if you don’t have constant feedback, even when it might be negative, there’s no way to learn and grow. Applying that feedback to your business and your product is the best way to create success.
What apps do you use on a daily basis?
As with most companies, Springbuk heavily utilizes its CRM system. It is the backbone for scaling the company, drives the marketing initiatives, and is key to engaging with the ever-important customers. For the purposes of internal communication and company culture, Springbuk also commends Slack as an essential tool.
What’s next?
In the past five years, Springbuk has been focusing on responsible growth that is good for the team, customers, and stakeholders. With the continued vision to “prevent disease with data”, we are still focused on growing Springbuk for years to come. After several years of working to create a superior product, the current focus is to scale and continuously improve it.

2019.12.04 18:11 shitikarsh 5G Lifestyle

If you think we live in a society of instant gratification, just wait until 5G, the fifth-generation wireless network, reaches major cities worldwide.
But first, let’s pause to ask a crucial question: Why 5G? First-generation wireless gave us voice. Then 2G added text, and 3G enabled basic mobile computing. With 4G, we got higher speeds and zillions of apps to help us work and play while we’re using our phones. 5G opens the floodgates to download speeds of one gigabit per second, or more than 10 times what we’re used to. Movies will download in seconds, YouTube clips instantly.
South Korea and China now lead in development and rollout, but in the United States, 5G is now in more than two dozen cities–from Atlanta and Detroit to Indianapolis and Washington, D.C.–as wireless companies race one another to expand service.
Those networks aren’t necessarily ready for prime time. For one, you can’t tap into the power of 5G without a new, 5G-compatible phone. Plus, 5G relies on a spectrum that is so high–millimeter waves–it can’t go very far, or go through walls. And right now, it’s expensive to install.
But when it does arrive full throttle–and it will by 2023–5G will fundamentally change the role of the mobile device. In a 5G world, augmented reality will become truly ubiquitous, so common that the technology could be table stakes for businesses like retailers and gyms. A clothing shop, for instance, could use AR to let people see themselves in an outfit in a range of dynamic, immersive environments. A gym could give members graphical biometric readouts to track and optimize their workouts as they happen. The same technology will change live entertainment events. Baseball fans will use their 5G phones to play TV producer, choosing which of multiple camera angles to watch, and getting real-time data from cameras that track, say, the velocity and spin rate of pitches.
And 5G will unleash the bots. A factory manager could install a private 5G network and easily integrate a line of wireless, collaborative robots to work alongside humans making, say, precision-machined components for the auto industry. One group of robots could deliver raw materials to production lines and another could load trailers. With the wider network, they could move with more coordination, anticipating humans in their path and responding to their environment with more immediacy.
As a result, they will be more reliable and safer. And because the bots will be wireless, it will be far easier to add another production line.
The technology will reach everywhere. An indoor vegetable farm could install its own 5G private network and run faster, more fully integrated systems that talk to one another and respond with more autonomy, be they robots that pick plants or sensors and algorithms that adjust humidity, assess plant health, tweak temperatures, or manipulate hydroponic grow systems.
All this is doable today with 4G and Wi-Fi, but 5G will bring more instantaneous communication and a seamless, faster system. Tech firms, banks, hospitals, and other data-intensive companies will have the bandwidth to move enormous amounts of information in real time. In the case of health care, 5G is the pathway to digital therapeutics, allowing patients to get treated at home with the help of VR, AR, and mixed reality; doctors will use remote robots to visit patients in faraway hospitals.
Governments, too, will be able to collect more detailed data across geographies and, with the help of algorithms, predict and respond immediately to emergencies such as pandemics or extreme weather events. Combining 5G with mobile apps, sensors, internet-of-things devices, and predictive algorithms could turn notoriously slow local governments into well-oiled operators, with tools that span traffic, safety, and city services.
There’s no question that such a high level of surveillance and data capture comes with privacy risks–a particularly important issue in the U.S. Cities will need to plan now for how to protect citizens’ privacy while advancing new technologies that help them. The payoff is that the network will ultimately pave the way for truly connected smart cities.
And there are big risks beyond privacy. When things fail–and they will–they could fail spectacularly. Hackers will hit the mother lode, as they’ll be able to siphon off dramatically more sensitive data far faster than they ever could before. Cybersecurity will only grow more important–and the cybersecurity industry will have to grow to accommodate it. Think about 5.8 billion IoT devices next year, ranging from remote robotic surgeons to autonomous vehicles. It’s one thing to hack someone’s doorbell, but another to hack into an autonomous vehicle or a hospital’s medical devices.
5G has been called the catalyst for the world’s fourth industrial revolution, and planning for that future is essential. Consider what 5G will look like for your business–how it could disrupt your industry or create new opportunities. Forward-looking companies and leaders will plan now for privacy and security concerns, rather than backfill to solve problems as they come.

When someone suffers a stroke, oxygen flow to the brain is impeded. Every second is critical. Imagine that a doctor could examine a patient in an ambulance remotely, and brain scans could be sent to the surgeon waiting to receive that patient.
This is quickly becoming real. At Barcelona’s San Raffaele hospital, researchers are developing 5G-equipped ambulances that will allow remote specialists to view a patient in real time and deliver instructions as efficiently as if they were in the vehicle.
At King’s College London, engineers are also focused on stroke victims: Using portable MRI equipment, a paramedic in an ambulance can scan a patient’s brain and upload the images to the cloud in seconds. A doctor can then review the images and give instructions on how to best position the patient’s head and body; a neurosurgeon can look at the same images and be ready to operate when the patient arrives.
5G will allow innovators to create technology that isn’t practical or feasible on existing networks. At New York University, engineers and physicians are testing a system for the visually impaired that detects obstacles and gives verbal cues through a headset or tactile cues through a haptic vest. Using 5G allows the system to map the world more accurately and with immediacy. “It operates in real time,” says Mahya Beheshti, an NYU physician-scientist. “It’s a completely smooth process.” Plus, 5G’s more efficient power usage means battery life is vastly improved, a critical feature for such devices.
Mischa Dohler, chair professor of wireless communications at King’s College, likes to say that 5G will lead to the “internet of skills”–that is, a system by which a person’s physical abilities can be wirelessly transferred. For example, a doctor in one location could train the hands of another somewhere else using haptic gloves. Or surgery could be performed remotely using robotic arms, only possible now using a fiber-optic connection.
To demonstrate 5G’s instantaneousness, Dohler, playing piano in Berlin, recently accompanied a livestreamed hologram of his daughter as she sang in London. He envisions those kinds of interactions taking place between specialists and hospital workers, or between patients and doctors located halfway around the world. “It’s like Skype on steroids,” he says.
With the new generation of wireless, face-to-face conversations can be held via phone or tablet as naturally as in person. Diagnoses can be made via live video chat, making the world’s best doctors available to people anywhere they live.
Still, the ability to democratize access to health care will hinge on infrastructure. “If you look at all the plans that carriers have today for deploying 5G, it’s mostly in urban areas,” says Monisha Ghosh, wireless communications researcher at the University of Chicago. “5G makes many things possible. The question is when the carriers will roll it out to rural areas”–where hospitals are closing and remote health care is desperately needed.
If 5G goes national quickly, it could be big news for startups like Seattle-based 98point6, whose app connects patients with doctors via text chat or video. “We’ve all had that experience where a mobile app fails us in a critical moment,” says chief technology officer Damon Lanphear. “And then you say, ‘Well, I’m not going to rely on this thing again.’ 5G has the potential to enhance that trust and let users feel like they can use our product when they need it, wherever they are.”

2019.10.21 16:56 acerod1 Verizon Adds Home 5G Internet Service in One More City

Verizon is extending its wireless home Internet service to Chicago starting next week, the first addition to its in-home 5G push since last year.
Starting on Oct. 24, residents in parts of Chicago will be able to sign up for the home Internet service with speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, fast enough to download a high-definition movie in under a minute. Customers who already subscribe to Verizon wireless for phones pay $50 per month for the service, which otherwise costs $70.
Relying on 5G wireless technology, the service doesn’t require costly and time-consuming wired connections for installation. About a year ago, Verizon debuted its 5G home Internet service in parts of Sacramento, Houston, Los Angeles, and Indianapolis. But those efforts relied on early 5G gear that was unique to Verizon. Equipment for the Chicago service follows the industry standard known as the 3GPP New Radio standard that carriers are widely adopting worldwide.
Verizon said it would supply customers of the Chicago service with a Wi-Fi router incorporating the newest Wi-Fi 6 standard and a smart speaker that includes the Amazon Alexa digital assistant. The Wi-Fi 6 standard, also known as 802.11ax, is the fastest incarnation of the technology yet and should help 5G home customers get the most out of their service.
The home Internet push is distinct from Verizon’s mobile 5G offerings, which currently cover parts of 13 cities, including Chicago, with plans to reach 30 cities by the end of the year. Most of the 5G competition among U.S. carriers has so far focused on mobile, with AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile also racing to expand speedy smartphone service to major metropolitan areas.
The home Internet push also differs from the mobile service in a key way from Wall Street’s point of view. Currently, Verizon charges the same monthly fee for 4G and 5G mobile service, meaning the company isn’t yet profiting much from the billions of dollars spent to build the 5G network. But the home push is aimed at customers who currently get Internet service from other companies, so all of the revenue bolsters Verizon’s financial results.

2019.10.06 14:18 AmchadAcela The Future of Amtrak?

Amtrak is at a strange crossroads for its future. The Northeast Corridor and many state-funded routes have done well at building ridership even with limited funding and outdated infrastructure. The Northeast Corridor is in the process of getting new Acela equipment and new passenger coaches to replace the outdated Amfleet equipment. Many state-funded services are in the process of getting new locomotives and coaches from Siemens. The long-distance routes have recently been under attack by Amtrak's current management, but with out proper accounting practices we really do not know the true costs of these routes are. Amtrak's accounting is a mess and the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act and Congress failed to make sure they reported their costs properly. Aging equipment on the long-distance routes puts there future in jeopardy also especially for the Western long-distance trains using two-level Superliner equipment. The Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act dumped the operating costs of the 750 mile or less routes completely on the states, but for some reason the Northeast Corridor is still federally subsidized, which is unfair. Private freight railroads have not followed their end of the bargain with making sure Amtrak has priority and they are failing to maintain and upgrade their infrastructure to bring it to what you see in other developed countries. Overseas in Western Europe, Night Train service has made some what of a come back as people look at greener alternatives for travel. Most of those Night Train routes usually fall with in 372 miles (600 km) to 1118 miles (1800 km). The 750 mile rule of PRIIA really puts the brakes on Amtrak providing this style of service since it would require state's to pay for many of those trains. To improve Amtrak they need consistent funding and reforms to modernize their network. PRIIA needs to be amended or replaced, Amtrak needs consistent funding every year so they can actually long-term plan properly, cost of the trains should be split between Federal and State, there needs to be a massive expansion of electrification to reduce emissions/lower operating costs of passenger rail, and the Federal Government might need to look into the public ownership of rail-infrastructure. We need a massive expansion of intercity passenger rail and high-speed rail corridor style services on short-to-medium distance major travel corridors in America. We need frequent day time service and in some cases high-speed rail service on 100-500 mile long corridors like Jacksonville to Tampa, Charlotte to Atlanta, Houston to Dallas, Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinnati, Atlanta to Jacksonville etc. We need to provide quality Night Train service on routes like Miami to Atlanta, Atlanta to New York City, San Francisco to Seattle etc. Certain routes that serve rural areas like the Empire Builder should be kept, but the long-distance network needs to be planned based on research and travel demand and not use nostalgia routes from the 1920s. Amtrak Thruway bus service needs to be expanded to provide better connections to the trains. The goal should make sure 20-30% of intercity trips are done by rail in the US. I am hoping especially to fight climate change we really make this push. I do not want to see passenger rail outside of the Northeast, Chicago Metro Area, and California continue to be irrelevant for the rest of the country.
